Quotes of the day
My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys." ~ Harmon Killebrew

Monet lived and painted for 43 years in Giverny, France. He was inspired by his gardens, and spent years transforming them, planting thousands of flowers. But the picture today is of his living room. I imagine Monet at the cocktail hour enjoying his art collection.

When you haven’t got much space, vertical gardens may be the answer. They’re brilliant for balconies and patios. You might want to grow herbs or simply add some colour to your outdoor arrangement. If you use recycled material, you will also end up adding some visual interest. I hope you like it.

We arrived at Saint-Lager in the district of Beaujolais (France). Before entering the winery where we would taste some wines I took this photo of grapes still in their vine. It appear this grape was not favoured by the Duke of Burgundy, Philippe the Bold, who outlawed the grape in July 1395. Sixty years later another Philippe, this time nicknamed the Good, issued another edict against Gamay reasoning that "The Dukes of Burgundy are known as the lords of the best wines in Christendom. We will maintain our reputation". Using the carboni ...

I took the photo in Lyon (France). We were looking at the city skyline from the cathedral’s gardens when I saw this man in quiet contemplation. It transpired he was a monk of the little brothers of the Lamb. The community was only founded on 8 August 1990, but is spreading fast around the world.

I took the photo of these windmills in the town of Consuegra. These windmill are from the 17th century and have been restored to full working order. Consuegra is a town in the province of Toledo and in the vast region of La Mancha. I am sure the photo will conjure the mental image of the fictional Don Quixote.

I took the photo of this carving two days ago. It seems the art of gourd carving has been practiced for more than 4,000 years in Peru. Peruvian gourds tell stories of cultural events, you can see stories of celebrations, folklore, myths, tragedies, and daily events.

The meerkats (Suricata suricatta) is a small mammal that lives in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Despite its name, it is more closely related to the mongoose family than to cats. You may or may not know that a group of meerkats is called a "mob" or "gang", and all of the meerkats in a mob are related. I took this photo at the Australian Zoo, but if it had been in the wild I would have had to be near their burrow very still before sunrise so when the first meerkat comes out it would accept me as part of the scenery. ...

We drove 187 km from Charleville to Adavale, a rural town of 72 people in outback Queensland, only to find the pub closed and the landlord away to buy beer and provisions from a nearby town called Quilpie, 98 km away. Adavale had its heyday between 1889 and 1930, but the Western railway line bypassed Adavale in 1917 and went instead to Quilpie and as a result of this Adavale declined. Adavale is now a pub, a police station, a few scattered houses and vacant plots all showing the vestiges of a big fire that ravaged the town.

Bruges is also known as the Venice of the North. Bruges is a major tourism destination within Belgium. In fact, there was so many tourists in the historical centre when we visited last year that I had the overwhelming impression I was in a theme park. However, Bruges with its ancient buildings (this city golden age was from the 12th to 15th centuries) and canals is a very pretty place.

I took the picture in Bruges. The organ grinder played his melodious tunes in his street organ and sang for a few coins. These musical instruments have been played in the street since the late 18th century. In Europe, the street organ was part of an act of a group of musicians, served as background to an animal performance or even during sing-along sessions.

George Goyder gave the name "Mindil" to the swamps on the maps when he surveyed the town of Palmerston, Darwin's originally name. The beach in front of the swamp was eventually known as Mindil Beach. Mindil beach holds the Sunset Markets during the dry season and the annual Darwin Beer-Can Regatta. As the sun sets on Australian shores and 2023 comes to an end, I wish you a good night and a Happy and fruitful 2024.
