Monarto Behind the Scenes tour

Postby DanielA on Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:40 pm

I have just been on the "Working with Wildlife" behind the scenes tour at Monarto Zoo. It was a great experience.

We got to hand feed the Black Rhino, White Rhino, Meerkats, Giraffes, Lions and Hyena. (All fingers still intact) And got to pat various Cheetah, Rhino, and Wallaby. I didn't realise there were so many animals not on exhibit.

Hand feeding the Giraffe was a highlight. (both 18mm DX)

Driving around the enclosures in a ute with the windows down is much better than in the cramped buses.

African Painted Dog (200mm DX)

I did get a little close to one of the lionesses when she was eating. She wasn't interested in sharing. (20mm DX)

I'd definitely recommend the tour. It's not the easiest tour to photography, but it's a wonderful experience.

Daniel - well done.

You have a brilliant shot of an animal that I have come to like in recent times, the African Painted Dog.

Love Monarto Zoo. You have captured some wonderful shots
I had the privilege of filming there on a number of occasions, and as such spent a lot of time behind the scenes. Those Rothschild’s Giraffes are very inquisitive creatures.
Did you get to see the feeding of the Cheetahs? We were lucky enough. Hope you don't mind me posting one of my favorites from one trip. I made it small

Thanks. They're much better up close than from a distance.

Yes I saw them being fed. The boys are very quiet around people. Very different to the Lions... :D

thanks for sharing Daniel
we might book one in the next couple of weeks as we are on school holidays . Really like the giraffe shot as it oozes character . It must almost be perfect conditions up there at the moment after the rain

It was looking much better than I usually see it. I normally see Monarto when it's been baked to a crisp.
You'll want to look at it soon, as they want the booking two weeks before.

All these zoo pics has made me decide to go to the zoo (taronga in Sydney) on Monday...

Great images, I am going to have to consider getting an annual pass and learning the tricks to getting images like these.

Thanks. A pass makes it easy to come and go, so you can get lots of shooting in.

Thanks. They do seem to know how to pose for the camera.
