Yep, despite the obvious fact that your 70-300 is giving you fabulous results, you definitely need some outrageously expensive additional lens immediately. No worries. And a new bag to carry it. And a filter.

Good shots sheepie, you said you used the flash on the first 2, how far away was you when you took these shots, and if you was a fair way does the flash really make a differance over that distance?

Good shots. Love colours in #2 also, and am also keen to hear your answer re flash (I'm also a flash novice). I think you should buy yourself a 70-200VR!!!

In both, I reckon I was maybe five or six metres away at most, so the flash certainly made a difference. I think that it has helped render the colours a bit better, with higher contrast than I would have got in the available light. In the second one, you can see the reflection of the flash light on the wires. I think with a bit more experience, the first one would have helped the bird stand out from the background a little better - not quite there at the moment, but close

Did these birds visit your garden or did you have to visit them?

They were around the neighbourhood up at Old Bar (just out of Taree) - we spent Christmas there with the In-Laws. The Black Cockatoos have been terrorising the local trees for a couple of weeks now, while the kookaburra and others just hang around hoping to find some food!

Sheepie, #1 is a cracker! He's watching you take the shot... Nice with a bit of foliage and flowers etc. in the shot to make it very natural...

Geees, it's hard typing after a few reds... It's taken me three goes to upt in the dots! Damn, I'll give up now....

Jealous of the Black Cocky, they're not common so thanks for that one!

The kookaburra is almost similar to one I took 20 years ago on good old Tri-x and have sepia-toned and framed on the wall. It's one of my favourite prints. Spooky!

Your other birds are great, but look a little contrasty on my monitor. Are you slightly over-popping them in post processing? Do other forum members see them as slightly contrasty?
