Hi

I quite like this picture, but I'm not sure if it's slighlty under exposed? Still learning photography, never mind how to use the functions on the D70!

Also, have I over done it with the PP? The dark buildings towards the right (far side of the water) look a bit grainy/pixelly/wrongy.

I can't really comment on the buildings to the right as the image is to small for me to get a good look at them (plus I'm on a laptop so all images look a little grainy).

It is a good image and very well doen for handheld at 1/15!!! Do you have access to a tripod? if so maybe try using it for these shots and I beleive you will get much sharper images.

The only other suggestion I have, and this is a personal thing, is to maybe crop the top of the image a little. I personally don't mind cropping images quite tightly.

It's a nice capture, you did amazingly well to handhold it at that speed!

As for the amount PP, I don't have enough experience to really critique this well, but there does seem to be some noise/artifacts (see, I don't even know the correct terminology) along the suspension lines of the bridge and around the buildings. This could be from compression....otherwise it looks good to me.

Just out of interest CC, which part of Newcastle are you from? I'm originally from North Shields/Tynemouth (Knotts Flats in fact - you may know it!) and although I've been in Oz 30+ years I love going back for a visit.

And pictures like yours give me a twinge of homesickness

Yes, I like the pic too, Charlie.
I don't think it is under exposed - I think there is a certain mood to the photo as a result of your treatment of the light.
I do think that the image is not as sharp as it could be (obviously, as you say it was a hand-held exposure) and this makes the buildings and the people look a little blurred.

Overall CC a very nice pic considering all of the parameters, handheld, newbie, subject etc. Keep them coming coz just like Werewolf I left the old dart 30+ years ago but I am a Man of Kent and a Kentish Man as I was born in the Royal Navy hospital in Chatham Kent. That’s why I noticed with interest the building with HMS Calliope on the facade.

That's a great pic - compositionally and exposure-wise. Nevermind it was handheld at 1/15th, it looks fairly sharp and clear at the presented resolution.

The dark buildings at the right are about as good as it will be - for one, it's beyond the focus point, and it's darker than most areas in the frame, both of which exacerbates noise - but it's pretty ok as it is IMHO.

I really like the shot, I'd have no hope of getting something that sharp at 1/15th and I think the lighting suits the scene... Looking at the reflections in the water, don't know if you could push the overall exposure much more unless you played with just the shadows in PP maybe???

Great scene though...
