2x2 meet 13 Feb - Bondi to Coogee walk

Postby stubbsy on Sat Feb 06, 2010 6:21 pm

The next 2x2 meet is next Saturday 13th February. We'll walk about 6 Kms and it will take around 3.5 hours. While there are some steps, the walk is a fairly even grade so only an average fitness level is required.

Starting point is the corner of Notts Avenue and Campbell Parade Bondi at 9 am.

You can get there by catching a 333 bus leaving Circular Quay at 8:13 am which arrives at Bondi at 8:42 am. If catching that bus you alight outside Bondi chemist which is just past the Noah's backpackers on the corner of Francis Rd and Campbell parade. You then walk north to a set of pedestrian lights and cross the road. Alternatively you can catch a bus from Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach and return from Coogee to Bondi Junction.

From our starting point we'll travel along the coast from Bondi to Mackenzie's Point, past Tamarama Beach and Bronte Beach to Waverley Cemetery. Next leg is the recently opened Bronte clifftop walk past Waverley cemetry then we'll continue on past Clovelly Beach and Gordon's Bay to Coogee for lunch before heading home. From Coogee a 373 or 374 bus takes you back to Circular Quay or a 353 bus will take you to Bondi Junction station.

You can see the map of the walk HERE and some pictues from the clifftop walk section HERE

I'm going to try to make this.

Do you reckon we could bring the dogs? I'm sure they'd enjoy the walk (we walked them 8km last weekend and that only took 1.5 hours). The only problem would be the logistics of getting back to Bondi (if we leave the car there) but I'm sure I could catch a bus and drive to Coogee.

Andrew
From what I can tell in researching this the route itself is pretty level bar some steps none of which will be issues for the dogs. What will be an issue is the logistics you raise. I doubt you'd be allowed to take the dogs on a bus since I suspect they'd need to be an aid to the owner (eg a guide dog)for you to do so. One solution might be to pair up with another dog owner and park your cars at either end.

I have done this walk a number of times with my dogs, it is quite dog friendly, plenty of pooches along the way. There was only one place, from memory, where dogs were not allowed in the park and I think that was Clovelly. But there is a footpath that goes all the way around. Beaches are also off limits.

I've updated the list in the first post to show those attending. The weather forecast looks OK, but not spectaular at present. If it stays as "Shower or 2/Thunderstorms" we should be fine. Good news is the predicted max temperature is a pleasant 26C

IF CATCHING THE BUS FROM THE CITY
The 333 bus is Prepaid only - so you need a ticket before boarding (eg a TravelTen). If you board AFTER St James station in Elizabeth St my reading of the route map (see HERE) is you're travelling 5 sections and so need a brown TravelTen ($26.40), but if travelling from Circular Quay that's 6 sections and you'll need a red TravelTen ($34.40). The TravelTen is 10 uses and can be shared by dipping it multiple times on entry (so you could go halves or thirds with some others) You can find a route diagram showing arrival times at different points along the way HERE

The return trip is also the same number of sections. One important point is these two routes don't overlap until they hit the city end of Oxford st so take care where you park.

Also, there is the 555 shuttle service that runs through the city.

For free!

Gratis.

Zero, zilch, zip, sweet nutin"

So, you can board a 555 at the Quay, ride it up Elizabeth St to St James, and then swap over to your 333, using your brown TravelTen to take you to the beach.

Just be sure to allow enough time for transfers between buses. While they seem frequent enough to a casual observer, we are discussing Sydney's bus non-services, and when you're wanting the buses to run to timetable (or better), Murphy usually offers to help.

And I'm pretty sure you can purchase single ride tix too, but just not on the bus.

Is there a bus I can catch from Coogee back to Bondi?

Is there a place I can park at Bondi for the day that won't cost and arm and a leg?

I'm wondering if Coogee might be a better option for the longer term park?

But parking around all of the beaches is in heavy demand; if you move three or four blocks west you should be fine. I's been a long time since I've spent any time on Francis St - I used to live there a lonnnnnng time ago. Try 40+ years.

South Bondi, perhaps south of Bondi Road, west of Sandridge St, but not on Bondi Rd, because it will be restricted.

There is no Coggee to Bondi bus - from Coogee you go to Bondi Junction then change to a Bondi Beach bus and vice versa see http://www.131500.com.au/ for timetables and fares etc

Today's light should be very good, photographically speaking. There's not too many harsh rays of sunlight that will get through the cloud cover.
