Picture Of the Week May 10th 2005

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

Picture Of the Week May 10th 2005

Postby Glen on Tue May 10, 2005 1:22 am

I have chosen two POW's this week, the first as can be seen on the front, to celebrate the birthday of Gary the founder and leader of this forum and also a damn fine shot by Stubbsy which illustrates the framed image Gary received from this board on Saturday to celebrate his birthday on Monday the 9th (pencil it in for next year).

The second POW is by Matt K, and was chosen for a few reasons. The Opera House and Circular Quay was the site of the very first D70 meet, so personally this shot reminds me of that day. The main reason is because of the excellent composition, the way the sweep of the ballustrade leads one to the city itself, the interesting foreground, all perfect. Now readers, please try this at home! Here is an image, shot with the kit lens at 20mm F10 1/400 sec, which 99% of us have the equipment to take, if only we took the time to compose well and knew when to press the shutter release. Matt knows when to press the shutter. Excellent work.

These images will change positions during the week.

Gary framed portrait is also credited to Matt.K, this was shot some where in last weeks of December 04 or early January 05 with my Nikkor 200-400VR.

So we really have THREE pictures of the week? hehe

Good choice, although not being able to see Matt's Opera House is a pity (not sure what's going on here, no doubt will be sorted by the time I get to work!). Even though I can't see it, I'm sure it's great - simply because it's Matt's!

Well done, and Happy Birthday for yesterday Gary!

Oh - and congrats Stubbsy on joining the POTW club!

ahhh - I knew I could count on one of our fine Mods to sort it out :)

Very nice pic - up to Matt's usual standard and style of capturing our modern life :)

Fantastic choices there Glen! I too look back and fondly remember the very first D70user meet at the Quay...there is also something very unique about Stubby's portrait of Gary, very fitting for this week and his birthday and all. Congratulations to the two winners of this week's POTW! :)

Subbsy's unusual "portrait within a portrait" of Gary is very interesting and different. The perspective of the WA lens really makes Gary's "head" look too big, and we all know that's not the case :!:

I think I already said that Matt's Sydney Harbour shot looks like it could have been lifted straight out of National Geographic. The composition is outstanding and the treatment of the light is excellent.

We are seeing some really wonderful pix on these pages.

Guys

We really only have 1 POTW here. Gary's doesn't count.

The birthday shot isn't in the same league as Matt's excellent image, but there's a certain beauty to the fact that Matt has the honour of being the first (and probably only) person who can claim to have two POTW in the same week given his excellent photo of Gary also features in the other.

Congratulations and well done Matt. One day I'd like to be as good as you are now (I'll never be as good as you are at the time)

Stubbsy, I like yours, the only thing I would say is "never shoot a portrait against a brick wall"
