Canberrians: When is best Autumn colours for a meet?

PostPosted: Thu Feb 09, 2006 3:59 pm

I have been throwing the idea around with some of the mods and regular contributers here as to when the best time for a weekend long meet would be in Canberra with the idea to getting some sydney siders to come on up (the hill) to our fair (and at time of year colourfull) city...

What weekend do you think Canberra is wearing her Autumn best?

It may be a little off topic, but the Brumbies are playing the Reds here on the 29th if anyone's interested :)

22nd/23rd. Any later and I think it'll be too late in the season change.

Hmmm.. The only problem with the 22/23 is that it clashes with a photoshow in Darling harbour so we may loose quite a few ssiders to that...

Hi to all

Been away quite a lot later with work recently so haven't been contributing to the forum or involved in Canberra.

But back for a while. Lots of overseas photos some of which I will post one day.

I have noticed that the leaves are a 'changing already which may indicate an early "fall". Usually the leaves on trees around my place don't start changing and falling until late March - but this has already commenced.

The Canberra Ballons Fiesta this year commences on the Easter Weekend (17 April) so a mini meet that weekend could be considered as we could have the best of both worlds - "fall" and "ballons" - but I would like to particpate on whatever weekend is chosen. See site: http://www.canberraballoonfiesta.com.au/

I am going down to the photo convention in Sydney 28 -30 April.

Regards, Steve

I'll be there.

Unfortunately I'm out now, I couldn't organise all the logistics to get down and back up, but I wish you all a fun mini meet, I'll be back in the ACT in May, hopefully I can take some shots then.

I'm not going away the weekend before ANZAC day,
so I could come along to a mini meet.
Some ideas where to go and enjoy autumn ?
I suppose the older suburbs like Red Hill, Turner, Yarralumla or so would be great (Yarralumla with the lake ?).

Cheers,
CD

I have got exams the week after, but I am sure I can find time to get out on that weekend. :) I will do my best to be there, if we choose that day.

Hi all,

suppose it is time to hit the nail on the head and commit to the Autumn
Colour meet in Canberra.
We need to know when and where and who !
I'm fine for the 22nd or 23rd and it doesn't matter what time of day (daytime I mean :) )
What the heck, I'd also go on a night shoot if there are participants.
You will need to wear a warm jacket and a beenie etc if night shoot ...
Time is runing out so please help to make this meet happen.

Cheers,
CD

Well,

lets meet a the Red Hill lookout.
When ? Saturday morning at 10:00 am ?
Bring good ideas along about where to go.
The red Hill walk is great but not necessarily for Autumn colours.
Get serious, please.

Cheers,
CD

CD,

I'm free this weekend as well - lets put down Sat 10am at Red Hill as a meeting point. I'll think about some locations tonight for a suitable shoot.

Things are quite beautiful at the moment. Still partial changes on the trees.
There are fire red's, oranges and peach coloured trees everywhere. The liquid ambers are yet to to turn.

There will be none in 2-3 weeks ;)

The wind today is producing a veritable snowfall of leaves... very pretty!

I cant make any promises as such at the moment, but I will -Try- to be at a meet...

A walk around the embassy district could be good...

Where at red hill do we meet (never been there,.,, is there a road to the top?)

There's a road to the top of the lookout - off State Circle, take Melbourne Ave. At the very end of Melb Ave (past Canberra Girls Grammar on right) there's an intersection with Mugga Way. Keep going straight through the intersection and the signs will say Red Hill Lookout / Capital golf course.

At the top of the lookout there's a paved area.

If you hit the cafe at the top you have gone too far.

Sadly i think i will not be available but will confirm here on Friday.

so we are actually going to the lookout near the cafe and carpark or the little lookout on the corner with no carpark

Hi,

MHD is right regarding snowing leaves.
There might not be any left on the trees in two weeks time
I haven't been up there for a while.
What is the better spot ?
Cafe with parking or little spot ?
Are both far from each other ?
I'd be inclined to meet at the car park with cafe.

See you there.
You can contact me on 0411 484 238.
If it happens to forcast a down pour, please think of indoor alternatives.
The National Art Gallery without tripod and back pack (you can give your back pack or large bag to the cloak desk thingy) is good for a stroll and shoot.

Cheers,
CD

Cafe car park it is!

CD, how about the National Museum for an alternative if the weather is crappy?

some ideas for autumn colours so far:
* parliamentary triangle (could combine with balloon fiesta, which I'll probably be at before the meet)
* Telopea Park / Kingston

Hi Daniel,

If weather crappy, National Museum is a good alternative.
If weather good: Yarralumla nursery with a stroll to the English Garden is quite nice.
Actually the nursery has some very nice orchids inside and the English Garden in Yarralumla has some great colours.

Meet at Red Hill Lookout (carpark at Cafe) and table our options and then decide ?

See you there,
CD
