well, looks to me like Nikon dropped the ball. this is a d40x with a sensor cleaning system and thats it.
just going by RRP, the d60 is more expensive than the feature packed xsi. they must be joking. is it April 1st on planet Nikon ?

What a strange "upgrade". I've got a D40x (well, my wife's), and I was hoping really for a D80 replacement. I ended up choosing the D40x over the Canon 400D back in September/October. Six months down the track, is the D60 really a strong contender against the 450D? Just rather baffling to jump to "60" when it's really more like a D40x MkII...

where are you getting your RRP from?

going by the prices on dpreview the D60 kit is cheaper ....

450D Kit: €849 / US$899 (with 18-55 mm IS lens)

D60 Kit: €699 / US$?? (with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR)

Looks like this is a marginal step up from the D40x with some functionality that is a little gimmicky?

Dp review have a brief hands on http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012 ... d601st.asp

I should just bite the bullet and buy the damn D80 I have been lusting after for a month or so :D

More like the D40 Mark III, since the D40x is the "Mark II" version of the original D40.

You can imagine the Nikon execs in a meeting... "hmmmm... won't look too good if we release a Mark III version of the D40 less than a year after the original D40. I know! Let's call it a D60 instead!!".

There is a $100 cash-back from Nikon AU on the D80 atm, which could mean:

- you get $100 back when you buy one
- a D80x or D90 is just around the corner.

;)

Cheers
Steffen.

I think Nikon have dropped the ball here a little bit. The market doesn't need a D40X Mk3 or a D60. The D40X nails that end quite well. I though personally that a D80X or a D90 would have been the next step for them. Although they have copped some flack over the lack of sensor cleaning on a lot of the line up. Maybe that's where the D60 has come from? A need in some corners for them to be seen to be covering all of the Canon advantages?

The new lenses look nice but not sure that there was a sufficient gap for the new 16-85mm. Could just be me though.

That cash back has been hanging around for a while, the same one was applied to the D200 as well. Wonder if there is a D80X/D90 just around the corner... When would be the next logical time to release it?

But when you are selling consumer goods - which that of the market sort of is.... you need to mirror the competition.

It is only the enthusiast who can determine the tech differences, and generally only with a background knowledge in photog from doing.

I did months of just reading before buying, and I pick up vastly different things now, to then.

Have you ever spoken with a sales rep or overheard a sales rep sell cameras?

The times I've dealt with them, they sell on features, not IQ or lens legacy or any of the other reasons that some of us would buy a D40 rather than a 400D or equivilent pentax/olympus models.

At this end of the market, it's all about matching features, keeping up with the competition, marketing gimmicks, etc etc etc.

I love the look of the new AF-S 60mm Micro Nikkor, kinda helps me stop tossing up between the old 60mm and the Tamron 90mm Macro.

The D60 is nice on paper, the Expeed processor is gonna lead to heaps of good stuff, increased dynamic range!!!!
