Quotes of the day
Love works in miracles every day: such as weakening the strong, and stretching the weak; making fools of the wise, and wise men of fools; favouring the passions, destroying reason, and in a word, turning everything topsy-turvy. ~ Marguerite De Valois

The name can be either "waterfall of the gods" or "waterfall of the chieftain, in Icelandic. It is believed that the waterfall was named when the local leader Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland in the year 999 or 1000. After returning home from a political meeting he threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. The legend appears to be a fabrication, for there are no official records. However, a window in the main church at Akureyri (Iceland), tells this story.
