Now I feel like paparazzi!I took a shot of a beautiful young woman on the Manly ferry yesterday afternoon - not the best light - to find that she is Sarah Hudson, an up and coming actress. I discovered this when I opened the Herald this morning.

Well I can't say the name rings any bells, but she has a pretty face, the most striking thing about this shot for me is the lighting, I love it... and probably nigh on impossible to recreate convincingly. Lovely work Shelia.
stunning portrait in the early morning light
i don't think you should feel like a paparazzi it's not liek you went out of your way to chase her and get this shot
She's a pretty girl.
I'm not sure if I like the close cropping at the top of her head, though. Still... up and coming actress? Am I up and coming too! ![]() ![]() Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Well done Shiela
- you must have a real strategy for choosing where you sit on the ferry and a great eye for anticipating the subject and the light. very masterful Bob G Bob

You're right, Bob - I did have a strategy of sorts. I normally sit in the same spot on the back of the Manly ferry - outside. Yesterday, I sat down and then noticed the young woman. I moved to the seat behind her and took a couple of shots. We did not really notice me as she was having an animated conversation with her two male companions (both actors). The earlier shots were not good as the light was just too strong. I hate shadows as far as portraiture is concerned. I waited until we turned towards Manly so the light was coming from her front side. The big plus is that I use a black lens (135 f/2) rather than the obtrusive white lenses favoured by Canon.
If I had known she was an actress, I would have given her my card ![]() Cheers and thanks all. Sheila Last edited by Sheila Smart on Tue May 09, 2006 2:09 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Sheila, a great shot and I really like the close crop as well.

That's a gorgeous image Sheila. The lighting is fantastic and it reminds me of a 1950s style Hollywood publicity image. Nice work.

Lovely shot Shiela - you leave us all to shame with your candids!
Leigh, way too much information Steve

Thanks all. Here is another shot. Its is very heavily cropped as I had a strong sunbeam on the right side of her face and rather than PS it, I thought I would crop - I know, the easy way out

Second one doesn't work for me, infact it freaks me out for some reason, I think its the close crop combined with the angle, just freaky.
I think the combination of a crazily close crop, massive make-up and you spelling your name wrong make this less successful than the other posted
![]() Nice work on #1, then Manly Ferry is going to have to start charging you extra for all the images you pick up there ![]() So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!
Thanks Patrick for bringing that to my attention - dohh! Will have to replace it in my FM gallery.

Yeah, something about the crop in #2 doesn't quite work. Needs a bit of context. #1 is yet another winner though. I need to start taking the ferry, obviously!
Somehow it doesn't quite feel right taking photos on the train..... Or stuck in traffic on Epping Rd, which is the other way I use to get to work.
