Hi Sheila, Very nice subject matter and composition, but I find the treatment of hands is way too dark (burnt), looks a bit over the top.
Alex
The composition works.
Just an opinion but, when is black - too black in black and white ? Prefer more shades of grey - unless the artist has a particular reason to make the image this way. Perhaps it is part of a body of work ? D300, D200, (D70 - now with daughter) and heaps of Nikon stuff.

Not sure I like the treatment and the shot looks a bit soft (could be the treatment) but it does have a deep emotional undertow to it, the hands are so expressive and it's almost like you can read her life story through the hands. For it's emotional content this strong is super strong and makes up for the apparent softness or unusal treatment (in my mind).
Well done.
Thanks all. Now here is the rest (or the top half) of the image, turned into sepia
![]() I think I will look again at the hand treatment. Cheers Sheila Sheila Smart

Ahhh - but a thousand words are said above.
Those hands deserve such a face - what a wonderful subject. D300, D200, (D70 - now with daughter) and heaps of Nikon stuff.

Here is a more conventional "treatment" of the lady's hands

Sheila,
the pp on the hands give her the appearence of a coloured lady, but looking at her face she isnt. I like the treatment on the face, shows her age beautifully. Do you let these people know you are taking their photos...??? Marty What does that button do....??
Hi Sheila,
I like the 2nd image a lot better, not because of the PP (the first image was just fine in that respect) but because of the more loose cropping. I found the first image a bit too tight, the hand bag wasn't really obvious at first glance. The second one makes the "clutching the handbag" the main subject. The original PP was fine by me, esp. since there was plenty of tonal range in the clothing, yet the hands were quite stark. Cheers Steffen.
I REALLY like the composition, it's really warm, really really warm.

I thought I should join the two together
![]() ![]() As you all by now know, I do like filters! Although the original image was fairly good (shot RAW), I believe that turning to mono brings out the best in a somewhat ordinary image. Cheers Sheila Last edited by Sheila Smart on Wed May 17, 2006 1:20 pm, edited 1 time in total.
