In the shadows

Two odd images which I captured at the weekend.

This first shot is of the Welcome Wall next to the Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour. I've tried to capture a shot of this several times and never quite liked the result. I think I've finally nailed it with this one.

I was taking a tripod shot of this water feature at Darling Harbour and someone walked through my shot just as I took it. Looked at the viewfinder and decided it worked better with some foreground so I got Leigh to pose for me.

Agreed Peter, the first photo is really interesting.
The shadow on the right looks like is looking at ( what looks like ) a crusifiction.
What is that anyway?

Lovely lighting and concept in the first image Peter. #2 just doesn't quite mix it with the first image in the visual impact stakes IMO :)

Hey Peter,
I like the first image, it makes you look twice to see that they are shadows. Great capture.

Peter,

That first image is outstanding! I hope you're not choosing POTW, 'cos this is a deserving winner.

The second is okay, but not in the same league. Can't put my finger on exactly what it is though that doesn't work.

Thank you all for your comments. #2 goes to the scrap bin and #1 goes to my best of the year Momento book.

I was worried my photoshop work in #1 might be obvious, but it seems to have gone over OK - I moved one of the shadows and cloned the blown highlight a little as you can see from the no PP version below:

Peter,

I agree that you've certainly nailed something with this. But the way that the writing on the wall has had the first three letters excluded, almost leads one to a different use for this wall. ;)

That said, the almost monochromatic treatment of the image works very well, and it looks great.

I think I'd like it even better with just one shadow, to help symbolise some sort of loneliness and welcome.

Gary

Didn't even notice that. I think the wall you're referring to might be a little further east than Darling Harbour.

I love the mood you've captured or maybe crafted, it really conveys a sombre, melancholy feeling, terrific image... PP works well too...

Very interesting Peter looks like you also relocated the right side human shadow to the left of the light post shadow in your PP'd version. Tis a better location for it (in keeping with the golden mean that makes for better overall composition :) )
cheers
