03/06/06 wedding...

Hey all,
2 weddings in 2 weekends! PHEW!
I have been assisting a local pro photographer (Mile Sabljak from Shot by Sabo Photography) who is letting me come along to the weddings he does and learn-on-the-job!

here is a peak at what I captured...











took around 400 images, which Ive gotten down to about 120 Im very happy with... now trying different things in PS.

Im learning heaps, and it is great to see how he arranges them, sees locations etc!

Sorry to say: I don't like much the way of your presentation of the photos and colours are off as skin tone and its surrounding.

#3 doesn't show for me.

I'm not all that keen on the angled ones. I've seen a few wedding photogs do the angled shots so they must be popular.
I just haven't seen too many that I like.

I'd like to see more of your work though, can you post a link to your gallery?

On looking at them again, maybe they do look a little flat. I'd like to see #1 with the contrast bumped a bit.

1, 3 and 4 are good. In terms of the skin tones, it's alright if you're planning on doing a bit more PP to it otherwise it's a bit dull...then again not sure what style you're going for. I feel these pics have a lot of potential - all you have to do is add in a bit more PP such as layering in p/shop, a bit of gaussian blur and vignetting.

Hope you don't mind but I had a quick play in p/shop to show you what I mean. Let me know if you want me to take it down.

Sorry to say: I don't like much the way of your presentation of the photos and colours are off as skin tone and its surrounding.

They look great on my calibrated monitor in Capture One Pro (with Canon's 30d embedded profile), Im outputting them to Adobe RGB...

what do people do here... do you embed an ICC profile, if so which one?

I'm not all that keen on the angled ones.

Im finding im doing it more than I thought, Ive noticed it and trying to include more straight horizons... It hasnt helped having one fixed focal length, Im tending to tilt the composition to fit everything in... I wont stop tilting though...

I'd like to see more of your work though, can you post a link to your gallery?

I havent posted the rest on an album yet... I just had enough time to upload these before work finished... Ill post a gallery link when I get around to it

Ill see if outputing in different profiles / without profiles fixes the flat colouring.

Very nice, natural shots.

They could be a little warmer I think - the groom especially looks a little pale.

I don't particularly like the weird angles either, particularly where you've cut of the groom's feet.

Some good shots, though. #1 and #4 are my picks and I would have liked #5 a lot more if it was straight.

I find the images a bit flat this end.
I work in adobe colour space and then use the convert command to convert to SRGB for web viewing.

I think you have done a great job.

This is what I would do with them:

Converted to sRGB - better display in most web browsers.

Boosted saturation and contrast via curves in PS and added slight darkening around the edges. Then a small sharpen

More impact and punch - if you like that sort of thing

As others have said. Great photos with a lot potential. I also do feel they can benefit from some pping, especially boosting colours a bit which are a somewhat dull at the moment.

#3 and #4 are my picks from the bunch, great work and the angle in #3 works well for me because of the bride's position in the frame.

The colours look off to me too. Most of us using Windows based PCs can't see colour profiles other than sRGB in our web browsers. When I saved and opened one of your shots in PS it instantly looked better (because PS can interpret adobeRGB) but it still wasn't warm enough for my tastes - the groom has an unfortunate resemblance to Lurch with his pale skin.

Pharmer's shot looks much better to my eyes, although the extra saturation has brought out noise (from working with small files) the skin tones and more importantly the whole 'feel' of the image is warmer and happier. The OP looks wintery in comparison.

Other than the colour, great work with the shots

I prefer the original, muted images. They are excellent!.....but stay away from the twisted camera look. It's no substitute for good composition.

I boosted the colours of the first image, and its now sRGB... I kept the colour from the faces... otherwise they turned orange!

Personally I think that is much better and is somewhere in the park of what I came up with at home here.
The only real difference to what I came up with is that I had a tad (I mean a tad) more colour in the grooms
face as he has a very ashen complexion.

I think you now know to work on your images in your preferred colour space and then convert to SRGB for the web.
Something has been gained.

Many have commented on the colours and I do prefer the more colourful version you recently posted. ... But the original coulours have a certain feel to them that I think could work well. It would depend on the intended style. Looking at the pro's site that you are working with - I think the style with the extra colour mixes better with their work.

You have used DOF very well. Not too shallow, but certainly bringing the subjects out as the focal point. Was most of this shot around f4 - f8?

The angles can get a bit off putting when viewed as a discrete image (although I don't think you went overboard on any but #2), but if the intended destination is a composite, magazine style album. The angle work will be handy and can work very well. Great job!

Yeah, #1 for me, especially the All New Colourised Version

Add me to the list of people who aren't fond of the angled shots. I did a lot of them when I was younger, but nowadays I tend to regard them as a special effect type framing as opposed to a stock trick

Except for the first shot - f4.0, the rest were shot at f2.8 on my 60mm macro (with 1.6x crop) I had to foot zoom a lot, and by the time I got well back, I had to quickly take a shot because it was onto the next pose or all over - hence the foot chop in one of the photos.

Less pressure certainly! I was really just grabbing shots where I could over his shoulder, and trying to pickup alternative viewpoints from what he had, so I was not coming up with the same images most of his shots will have eye contact, and mine will be coming from the side so Im not in his viewfinder I also have more time to pickup details - such as the bouqet etc... Im big on details.

I still cant believe Im accompanying him, he works in such a fluid, relaxed pro manner and his albums are something else! In my opinon one of the best wedding photog's in sydney area.
