Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.
Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.
Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.
Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Ok well afetr a big day of Karting I decided it was time to head to the studio.
(I have just purchased some 300w studio lights (cheap ones) to play with.) But i have a friend who has his own studio in his backyard. So with 2 500w flash/lights with softboxes and a couple a local radio anouncers (one being my sister and the other my old co-host from my radio days) Here are my efforts.
Didn't really have much of an idea what to do but thought its a good start, now I have my own lights I can work from here.... Don't worry - NO self portraits!
fire away... please
Cheers

Yes.
Seriously ....
I'd like to see you play with the positioning of the light sources just a little more. For instance, in the first two, I think you've tried to equally balance the two light sources evenly, one on each side.
The problem I see with that is that it's just a bit too flat, and leads to a lack of shaping and modelling on your subjects. Try moving one of the lights further away from the models, so that the light sources become less equal.
This should add an element of depth to the lighting. Look at the difference in the lighting on the third image, and you'll see what I mean.
I hope.
See how that goes.
In the third one, the composition does nothing for me; there's ereally no context to the poses, and they're each only half a person. Something in someone's hands, the models interacting with one another ....

Jonesy, agree with Gary but would further add that 1) seems to lead in to the arms but the elbows aren't there. 2) you cropped the guys head and 3) like the DOF but too arty for me, seems like two half bodies but I like where it is going, would like a different crop. Good effort

I can't comment to much. I like the OOF shot with your sister at the front. I wouldn't cut of arms etc or tops of heads, people tend to notice them missing.
Is the radio station Star FM? We have one in Central West NSW with the same name.
Good luck with the studio shots in the future. Practice makes perfect.
