Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

here are some shots from backstage

everytime i shoot backstage i scope out locations usually all you have to work with is a boring white tent with lots of clothes hangers around
not photogenic at all, but with enough thought you can find a nice place to shoot
outside one of the tents at fashion week there was an exhaust pipe from the airconditioning and i used that to act as a hair blowing machine

i didnt use fill flash so i could keep the heavy shadows under the eyebrow ridge of the model, it suits the brooding look
Image
fashion: Romance was Born

here i used the clothes hanger so the model could work with it
in post production i added the shadows for mood
Image

take 2 wind machine. light source: sunlight
Image

this is a highly Jez Smith derrivative image, shot it for mood, added shadows in post

Fourth one for me.

I'd be careful with some of those curves Wendell. You've got some great texture in some parts of the face but you're almost losing it to too bright a colour in the other pics.

hi

im a curve and levels junkie i blow out the highlights darken the shadow tones to get my contrast

the rest is just a lot of airbrushing and dodge and burn
legacy techniques used in the darkroom for the same effect have now been virtualised in photoshop so im not doing anything new

thanks again

agreed leigh on the loss of texture the more texture i loose the more fake the image looks.

you have no idea how long i've been busting for your backstage pics! That last one is very, very Jez Smith like you said. Once again innovation and creativity trumps technical knowledge ;)

They are incredible - just goes to show - ingenuity and creativity really are the most valuable qualities in a photographer - I can't see anyone else's shots being anywhere close to those is they didn't find that air conditioning vent!

Great work Wendell, as always you've gone the next mile in explaining you thought process and techniques, I think the airconditioner as a hair blower is genius having had a few shoots in a aircondition closet myself

Can I ask if you'd induldge us with even a low res thumbnails of what #2 and #4 look out of the camera before the extra shadows etc for mood ? I know you a wizard with PP but I'd love to see the original product to better understand the lengths you go to to create mood, feel and style with your images. (I'm also cool if you don't want to share, just a polite request). Out of these four which are all great my pick is #3 I really like the pose, the eye contact and the mood you've created well done.

hi

thankyou for the praise and critical feedback
i appreciate it

craig here is an original image for you

as you can see im achieving my light shaping with the use of my off camera flash
but there isnt much mood

Image

i also know how to duplicated the same effect by templating the strobe/flash in the real world

i use the camera and photoshop as tools to realise my vision so i dont mind processing or rebuilding images so long as it fits my vision of the final image, thats just 7 years of post work in the advertising industry talking, as art directors don't care how an image is made just so long as the end result matches their vision using whatever methods are available
