Recent Work Trip

A recent trip away with work took me to sunny Roxby Downs, I managed to get away from the laptop for a few seconds, enough time to get a few snaps. Some of the better ones are below.

On the weekend I took a spin to Andamooka, it's a very ummmm 'different' place!
D80, 18-200, Hand Held


This one was shot just before sunset with the 80-400(Firts shot with the new lens), I really like the colours in this one, it;s reasonably sharp, not sure about the dark black tree branch though


I believe this is a Black Kite, plenty of them around although I was really hoping to get a nice shot of a Wedge Tail it wasnt meant to be, Couldnt find one
Has had some PP treatment, Cropp colours and levels


On the way back from the airport I had the 80 400 fitted on the D80 expecting to find an Eagle or Kite and saw this guy sitting on the road(Had to swerve to miss him!) So i pulled over and shuffeled him off the road while taking photos and trying not to become road kill my self! Of course i had to have the biggest lens I have on at the time, I left the 18 200 back at the office so i had to step back about 2m to get focus... Grr, kicking myself now.


Any feedback on these images greatly appreciated, I'm only new to this game, loving it but still developing my style and skill.

You've got some nice, sharp shots. The second does suffer from the tree branch, it makes me want to duck! I like the other three. Andamooka is definitely somewhere different. A bit like Coober Pedy.

Hi Cory.

I'd like to suggest a bt of cropping.

In the first, lose about 60% of the sky. On the rh side of this image, see the clouds as they rish to the rh edge? Crop where the cloud meets the edge of the image. tell me what you think.

In the second, the dark branch/blotch detracts significantly from this image, so just crop most of it out. Leave just a smidgeon, and then crop a little off the bottom to make this image square.

In this image you were facing some significant issues with exposure. How far away from the birds were you? I'm presuming too far to use any form of fill (not surprising) but the exposure here was very problematic, with mixed shade and bright sunlight, but I don't think that your main subject is actually blown. There's a lack of detail in the feathers, though; are you able to selectively pull more detail from him? If so, I think that would help enormously.

Nicely done. I do agree with Gary about the cropping.

#3 watch for oversharpening..can see some halos although this could be JPEG conversion artifacts...

Good capture of the blue tongue. If it snake you would have been greatful the for the 80-400..

Nice color ins the first also.

surenj, yeah i was carefull on the sharpening but the bottom on the bird was in mostly shadow and I had to push photoshop pretty hard to get it where it is

Indeed if it were a snake i'd have been loving the 80-400, although i would have still been as close as possible!

I'll crop the branch form #1 and see what happens
