Does the 105mm Nikkor Macro allow you to get closer in on a subject than the 60mm Macro or does it just allow the same from a greater distance away?

Awesome shot! Actually, I like the close crop the best - it forces the viewer to consider the intricacy of the subject rather than just saying "it's a dandelion"

105mm allows your to stay away and this is it's advantage to 60mm. Magnification is the same for both of them - 1:1, AFAIK

Tarotastic - the crop you have made from the original pic takes one from the superb to the sublime. This is what separates the mundane from the creative and you have shown creativity with this superb photo nee crop

Terrific image! Crop really looks fanatastic. I wonder with the quality of the original image you might experiment with a a variety of crops to produce some more startling images?

IS there a way to get even closer in than 1:1? I've heard people talk about reverse mounting a 50mm backwards on to a macro lense, but have no idea what that does!! Anyone know?

You can use extension tubes, which fit between the camera and lens. They come in different sizes, and are made both by Nikon and third-party manufacturers like Kenko. The greater the distance you move your lens from the camera, the higher magnification you achieve. You also decrease aperture, so you nearly always need to use flash illumination.

Yes, big difference - in price!

I have Nikon extension tubes that I bought many years ago. From what I have read, the Kenko ones are fine, and a lot cheaper.

Does anyone know how I could reverse mount a 50mm lense onto a 105mm macro lense? Someone once told me about this technique, but I have no idea how this would be done!!

I believe you can buy reversing rings, I've never seen them advertised but they are out there.
Simple solution would be to gaffa tape them together before buying something your not happy with.

Maybe try http://www.vanbar.com.au I bought my Nikon BR-2A 52mm reversing ring for my 50mm f/1.4
It works quite well, needs a lot of set up time with a tripod and flash plus it's all manual settings.
Here's an example of what the reversed 50mm can achieve.



There's not much DOF due to the large apperture I was using without a flash firing.

I enjoyed the challenge of the original post. I was going to be a smartie and say little straight bits with lots of circle bits too, but really wanted to be a bit more analytical than that.
I worked out the round bits were a liquid, probably water. From this, I figured I was looking either pretty much straight up or straight down. Due to the dark centre, I guessed down. That was as far as I got.
Ah the joys of Macro.

I remember reading some time ago about reversing rings to reverse mount various lenses etc, maybe do a forum search for "macro reverse" or something, and if no good there, try a google search.
