kookaburras

got these two today.
seemed to be kookaburras everywhere, but not much else
At least they are an aussie icon.

edit: just noticed a green cast on the portrait. will have a look at when I get back in.

This must be the time for the kookaburra photos. :) Nice photos, I like the clarity of the eyes. I struggled with that when photographing my kookaburra. The background in the photos have an interesting "painted" quality, as well as the kookaburra itself in the first shot.

I like the shallow DOF AVKOMP and I love Kookaburras except early in the morning. :shock: Then again they do remind me to get up and not miss the "magic hour" 8)

Awesome photos! My pick of the two is the second one, I feel that the background in the first a little bit bright.

Any chance of some EXIF for them? In particular, what focal length / aperture? The DOF is beautiful.

both shots taken with nikkor 80-400vr @ 400 handheld
sb800 for fill
shot 1
1/320 f5.6 iso 200
cropped to portrait

shot 2
1/200 f5.6 iso 200 full frame
normally shoot the 400 @ f8 or higher but there were branches and stuff behind that I had to blur, also the light wasnt so strong under the canopy and I needed as high a shutter speed as I could get
