Thursday Island(3) 6 shots-Pearl Diver's Cemetery

It was quite sad to see the number of divers who died here involved in the pearl shell diving industry in the olden days. As you can see - most are of Japanese origin. I believe there is a group that conduct maintenance on the graves but many are in disrepair. You can see that one of the grave "posts/stones" has been eaten by termites. Many were missing/gone. I guess the more wealthy divers were given stone markers, but most were wooden.

Please let me know what you think of these images and my processing.

Sorry Willy,

Not a fan of B&W, but the last one - Excellant! liked the perspective, made me stop and reflect on your comments, maybe a bit more DOF for the b/ground?... but good! :D

Cheers Andy - tossed up doing the whole lot in colour but went with the B+W because the sky was giving me the sh its.

Thanks for your feedback.

I was hoping for a little more feedback on these shots guys. Just wondering why they dont work for you. Is it the treatment (like AndyT's reply) or the composition, or do the shots just lack zing in the subject material?

Cheers
Steve

pS: Currently on sugar-coating free diet so tell it like it is.

Hey Willy I like number one, but the others are rather "busy" IMHO there is just too much going on in the BG to focus on. I like the idea in the coloured shot, but I also feel that it needs somthing to focus on in the BG as well.

Hi WW,

you have an interesting photography subject there.
I'm looking for words to describe what I'd like to see in those images and this is my very personal opinion:

Well, I think they are a great subject.
They need to be more dramatic (more umpff: contrast - highlights).
They could also be quite interesting in colour despite the sky that gave you the proverbial. (It may be good material for being more dramatic ?)
They probably could do with more DOF.
Perhaps accenuate a grave at the front of the photo with sharp focus and have the focus fade towards the back.
Some ideas here.

HTH,
Christian
