Hi all.

Here's a recent pic of mine that at first I didn't like, but then after looking at it for a while I noticed something. There are 3 distinct elements, the foreground, middle ground, and background. At first I thought the background was dull and uninteresting, but now I feel it is an integral part of the image.

Another thing I noticed and perhaps I am looking into the image too deeply, but I feel this it adds to the image. Take the shape of the rock and move it up 1/3 of the image.. the shape is roughly the same... then flip it 180 degrees and move it up to the top 3rd... roughly the same shape. Am I seeing too much into this?

I admit that at first glance it does seem like a basic and boring image... but I just can't stop liking it.

What do you think?

Owen, if you like it then that's all that matters. BTW, I like the image as well. A couple comments though. There's probably some good detail hidden away in that rock wall that you may be able to get with a bit more processing. It looks like you didn't use a polariser from the light reflecting off the leaves. I find waterfalls are really hard to do because there's typically so much dynamic range to contend with. I wouldn't attempt a waterfall without a polariser.

Anyway, as I said, I like the image.

nice pix but if you play with it using lab color the image will jump.......

Thanks for the comments john. When getting this ready for the web I slid the contrast slider up a bit too much. I'll see if I can get a better copy up later tonight.

I have just had a play with your image using lab color and it brings out the colors in the shot ........ I can post it if want me to.....

I dont mind this also.

I am a sucker for waterfall shots though!!
I was using a time exposure of a waterfall as my wallpaper for ages.
agree that it may benefit from bringing out the detail under the rock.

this was done very quick and needs a bit more adjustment re the reds, but very simple to do

copy image
convert to lab color
new adjustment layer for curves {use the small squares not the large]
in the A channel move the top 3 squares in
and the same at the bottom
Do the same for the B channel

If happy convert back to RGB and it will flatten your image.......good luck....

i tihnk the changes big pix made to the coulors in lab mode really lifted the image only some very subtle changes ( that is the trick)

I think that I recognise that rock ! You must have hopped over the fence as well.

avkomp: I had this one on my background for ages too... as I mentioned in the original post I just kept on staring at it and it really grew on me.

antman: gumboots are a wonderful invention aren't they! everyone else had muddy feet Besides the obvious shot from behind the fence at that location, this is about the only other interesting one I could find there! Not much else to provide any real foreground interest.

owen, I didnt have gum boots on the weekend, I took my shoes and socks off and did the biz in bare feet, trying not to get swept away by the current which was quite strong.

was wishing for gummies though because I had been to those falls a few times and have always been able to ford without getting wet.
different story on sunday though the falls were pumping.

I'm a sucker for a nice waterfall image and I like this

Nice composition, there's good foreground interest although I'd be tempted to crop out the actual bottom of the rock where the sand is, and to have a play with a little dodgin' on the moss and a few fern fronds in the background along the water's edge... Be tempted to clone in some greenery/foliage in the top right where the light's peering through, just a thought...

Gumbies come in handy on this sort of stuff huh, it makes the shot when you can get into the right spot for a nice angle...
