Life and death struggle

Was walking to the beach this morning, and came upon this scene. A dragonflyish type bug had skewered a bee, which was still struggling. I raced home, connected up my macro lens (which incidentally is my freebie, el cheapo Tamron 70-300mm) and went back to the beach. Thankfully, the bug was still there sucking the life out of the unfortunate but still struggling bee.

Wowser - not bad from, as you say, ye oldie Tamron. This must give you the incentive to add a prime macro to your arsenal Max

Actually Chris I was reading the macro post from last week (I think it was anyway?). Yes, t'would be good to have a nice dedicated macro lens, I think the one you have is a Tamron from memory.
I would also like one of the new Nikon 80-200 VR jobs when they are released in the new year I believe, hopefully sub $2K in price.
I bought a Lowepro bag yesteryday from Fletchers in Coffs Hbr. The salesman showed me the built in rain cover. I went from there to the beach to take a few surf shots, and while out on the headland, the rain came suddenly down in buckets! Thankfully my D70 was safe and sound inside the Lowepro.

Maybe one day my dream of a nice VR lens will come true?

At least the dreams are free!!
Until then, "Press on with Tam-ron"

Thanks Glen and Bob, I'm not sure what I'm doing with macros at this stage, in fact I'm not sure what I'm doing with anything at any stage!
But it's a lot of fun trying.

Is that the new lens from Nikon, but not officially announced or released 80-200VR?

Birdie,
I was talking to the bloke from Camera House in Coffs and he said they have some on order, (just like the D200), not expecting delivery until Feb-April maybe, but he definitely said sub $2K for the 80-200 Nikkor VR.
I suppose though you always get what you pay for and maybe corners will have to be cut to get it to a price point. Whether it will come anywhere near the quality of the current 70-200 VR is yet to be seen.

Wow.. that's kinda creepy... and yet, fascinatingly cool
How close did you have to get to the subjects in question with that lens? Obviously not too close to disturb dinnertime!

Unlike P&S camera where you can basically almost touch the subject and still be in focus, I have to be approx 1 metre away from subject for this lens to focus, and I used a tripod and sometimes even the self timer.

ozimax,
I'm not bashing anyone here or the guy at Camera House in CH.
The lens 80-200 VR
does not exist and Nikon had not release or announce this type of lens, how can he does the backorder with Nikon/ Maxwell?
Perhaps he created his own theory to attract his buyer or did he know what he's talking about.

Max, Birddy, maybe the guy was talking about the eighteen to two hundred and it sounded like eighty to two hundred?

Birddy, I am sure you will have one, somehow I don't think it will be your first choice to walk out the door with

Very ambitious range by Nikon 18 - 200

Especially with 3x zoom on a DSLR!!!!! I don't think it's a good performer.

Me either, electronics has got better, but you can't change physics. AFS and VR don't turn a sows ear into a silk purse

The 24-120 VR has proved ambitious enough...

Methinks you are right here Matt & Birdy, most probably 18-200 is the go, is this lens coming out early next year?

Glen, I think Harpo is not quite the right avatar, some have suggested Curly, my wife reckons it's Groucho without the moustache, oh well, another head suited for radio!
