I attended the University of Sydney Textile and Design Show on Tuesday.
The production and Fashion was much improved from previous years
This years student works was nothing short of amazing, lots of layered and segmented chiffon organza garments masterfully crafted and presented professionaly by the models, it was a tight show.

I decided to use direct flash set on manual 1 to 9 meters, shutter 160-250, f2.8 constant ISO 400, with the benefit of the new D2X firmware the noise ratio was negligable in low light. Shot with D2X single servo mode, focus area: single, colour balance set to custom referencing a white card under a light test at the start of the show, used the 70-200 VR on. The 70-200 is great for composition but I still think it's hard to handle changing focal length and then re-focusing compared to the 85mm prime.

Nice series Wendell. That first one is a good catch with the eye contact and nice smile.

Hi Wendal, these are great pics mate and you know the best thing i like about them the most, they are wearing even less clothes,LOL hey i cant help it if im a perv.LOL But yes i do think sometimes with fashion it is like some art you see and go WOW do they call that art. But still well done i have only tried to do some shots like these with many people around and hard to get in a good spot so i know this was no easy task.

Question, on the sb800 i gather you set it to GN mode and set the distance, after you took the shots did it change it's distance again as i have had this problem at times, set it for likr 9 then next shot have to reset after every shot???

The fashion on show is great, just great!

Great to see the images from the night Wendell. There were some very talented clothing designers at UTS - and this is from someone who doesn't appreciate fashion at all (anyone who's seen my lack of fashion sense will attest to that).

But looking at the models, I'm reminded less of the song "Zombie" by the Cranberries. You've captured I guess the most personality conveying split seconds - the rest of the time the models were robotic drones going about their duties. These have actual smiles, facial expressions, even hinting that these girls have some kinda inner emotion...

You've done well with the lighting/WB too. It's better than real life.

Now which one of these was Nnnnsic's ex?

Out of 4-5 shooters on the night, I was majorly surprised there was only 1 Canon user. And a 35mm at that. All the rest were using D2X's and D70's. There was even that one guy who shot on an ancient Nikon FM, full time manual focusing - a bitch with constantly moving subjects, hoping/trusting that the auto flash exposure of the SB800 be up to the task.

the FM guy was you and you only had 1 roll of dodgy film, I thought you rose to the occassion
As for the robotic nature of te runway presentation that's the new chic as models are just ment to convey or present the clothes within the theme that the designer wants their design portrayed, there is a reason for everything, smiles are a bonus but seriously the fashion is most important at closer scrutiny the sheer creative design process can be seen and appreciated.

i didn't post pics of Leigh's ex I am trying to give him a break, it seems like she is making waves in modelling.

Geoff it's not a ob, just do it because i think fashion has a lot of artisitc flair and makes for some great image making.

BBG regarding flash on GN mode I think i stuffed up in some of my pics he flash is strong at 9 meters but the majority there is flash falloff so i think i did not re-set the flash on many shots, I should have used TTL, still experimenting

Killakoala I think creatively this show was one of my best, but in terms of aesthetic quality i still love my fashion week series the best the established $70,000 lighting setup really makes for the best runway pictures. This show was lit well but it wasn't bright as i was shooting at ISO 400 and 1/160 with flash to compensate, at fashion week I was shooting 1/250 ISO 100 in available light.

Wendell. I think that these are far and away the best of these you've done so far, but they all seem a little soft to me (the first one in particular), was that your intent or is it just my tired old eyes?

Hi Peter thankyou
they are soft because the VR, Thanh told me long ago the VR causes slightly soft images, and the fact they are jpeg at setting 61%
compared to the 85mm prime the 70-200 with VR ON produces soft images in low light but in studio conditions with a bright strobe light and correct exposure it's darn sharp. This UTS show was lit evenly but it wasn't as bright as it should have been.
