Innocence & the devil (2 img)

Took this photo earlier today and I love the sweet, innocent look on her face....as well as those huge eyes (minus the conjunctivitis in her right eye)...




...but then I look back on a photo taken a few days ago, when her more mischevious side was showing...




Comments/critiques welcomed... I have held back posting alot of my kids pics recently, as I know to most people they can become boring very quickly

Well I am one (of maybe a few) that don't get sick of kid photos, and while I don't have my own take lots of my friends as they make great and engaging models. Sadly I don't post any out of respect for the families but I do enjoy that aspect of photography and always took for ideas, techniques and styles to help improve my skills.

The first shot is great, the nice tight crop immediately gets your attention with those big wide eyes. She locks you with her stare, while the fact her head is sideways creates an unexpected perspective that further adds interest.

The second shot, isn't as strong for me, as firstly the crop is looser so lessens the impact the eyes while still engaging don't captivate as much, mainly due to their diminshed size... however she is still engagin the audience and the checky tongue poke makes this a fun and entertaining.
(To be picky, I'd crop the right a little tighter to remove the yellow edges they are a little distracting on closer inspection of the shot.).

Great shots, Dave. I agree with Craig, the first image is very strong 2nd one is also great but a bit more conventional because of the crop.

Dave - both pics are great but what hit me is the fact that you have used a lens that does not often get good wraps - you have made the Sigma sing

I for one thoroughly enjoy your images of your children. Not only are they amazingly cute, but your technique is wonderful and produces some amazing images. You are collecting a fantastic set of memories for yourself and your family.

I agree the yellow object in the background is a bit distracting, but it wasn't the first thing I looked at....those amazing eyes just hold and capture me.

Chris - I guess it just shows that the quality of the lens used isn't everything. Even these "budget" lenses can pull off some remarkable shots - if used within their limitations

Deb - thanks for your kind words & support. With the amount of photos I take of the twins, one would hope to start seeing results

As suggested earlier in this thread, I have cropped the 2nd pic accordingly, and also desaturated the bright yellow part of the background. I think this definitely looks stronger now, but agree it is no match to the 1st pic.

I like the first one but not the crop. I think the crisp sharp eyes lend to a more unusual crop factor, maybe at 30 deg or something for a little different image.
