Steve, I enjoyed viewing the shots in your Tassie gallery. Where was that shot taken from looking up Macquarie Street? It looks like it was from a median strip somewhere down at the lower end. I could have sworn I saw a guy sporting a Nikon camera a few weeks ago wandering around on the median strip near Franklin Square, Macquarie Street. I think it was a Saturday morning.

That 80-200 2.8 does a great job with those cliff shots. Very nice.

Cheers John

The rock structures in shots #1 and #2, particular #2 are just beautiful and really have a 'Middle Earth' type of feel to them... It's an amazing headland, can you give use an idea of what sort of scale we are talking... (is that a light house on the top????).

#3 appears to be a little dark on my LCD... and I'm undecided I think a closer crop might help... but not sure how tight to go...

#4 doesn't interest me that much... the mix of new and old holds some appeal... but you see that in Sydney too, so I'm a little non-plused... perhaps I missed the point or goal behind this shot ?

Certainly love the first two... checking out the gallery now :)

I took that one from the War Memorial with the 80-200 @ 200mm.

John, i guess for you these pics would be like me looking at the Sydney Opera House :)

Steve, that's impressive from the War Memorial, it's a fair distance (~0.5Km from start of Macquarie St). I haven't seen much of Tassie's coastline from the water, so I enjoy your coastal shots. The shots around Hobart give a new and different perspective to scenes that are otherwise familiar, so I enjoy them as well.

Cheers
John

That's got to be one of the Two Towers. Oh, wait...

Yes, that's a tall lightouse on the ridge.

For scale, here's the cliff with the lighthouse.

And the lighthouse against the adjacent houses.

And just for the hell of it, the entire coast, which i think is called Cape Raoul, but i'm not completely sure.

Thanks Steve, those last shots really help to put it in perspective... they are some whopping big cliffs! And really great and interesting subjects to shoot.... Do you know much about the geology around that area ? The background of the kind of rocks making up the cliff etc ?

As far as i can tell, they are Dolomite/Basalt towers. (Dolomite = Calcium Magnesium Carbonate.)

http://www.touringtasmania.info/cape_raoul.htm

As to how they are formed i can only guess. However the formations are not unusual and are related to the crystal formation of basalt with dolomite within a high pressure and high heat environment such as a volcano or related structure. Dolomite does not form aboveground.

However i am no geologist.

Nice and clear Steve - you use your ability to get into great positions to your advantage, and I love seeing these shots :)
Looking forward to getting off dialup and having a good look!
