Bridge Photo

Hi all,

I took this picture a while ago when I first got my D70 and I'm don't know whether I like the photo or not, I certainly don't dislike it. So, I'm asking for your advice on whether I should have a tighter crop or remove the crane on the bridge or is there any other suggestions?

Thanks
Bill

Bill, I think I'm a bit like you.. I don't mind it.. but I'm not blown away by it either. It is always nice to see a different perspective then the more conventional style shots of the coathanger.

I like the busy geometry on the left... balanced by the open space on the right.

mrbillf, yeah Im not a fan. It actually looks like you took a photo of the crane :o . Personally I would have liked to have seen either a pillar or the base of the bridge to give it some perspective. But thats just my opinion.

Cheers

Just a personal opinion:
Not bad as it stands, but not a heartstopper either
To my eye this is the start of a very good abstract - try losing the gantry and light (?), maybe rotate the image 90 degrees CCW and tighten the crop.

Works better for me that way, but your tastes may vary (of course).

I'd tilt it clockwise till the verticals are vertical, and maybe crop out a bit of the sky so it's more the nuts and bolts bits.

Bill,

It is definitely worth another vist and look INTO the structure and design of the edifice rather than AT it. Either straighten the verticals or totally ignore them and use a bit of Dutch Tilt.

You're right about the crane - give it the flick - either by cropping this shot or cloning it out .... or by framing again if you return camera in hand.

Cheers,

Sheetshooter please explain the meaning of "Dutch tilt" This is a expression that my Grandfather would use when he F%$#@ up  This is the first time in 40 years that I have uncounted that expression. . Bless his sole if he didn't drink a bottle of Dimples every day he would have been 135 next month .
On the day of his cremation the furnace exploded a Northern Suburbs Crematorium we think it was his fault.     LOZ

Loz,

It is a movie term meaning to take the camera off the horizontal level and shoot at an angle - often quite a rakish angle at that.

"Dutch Tilt" or "Hollywodd Tilt" they are the same beast.

If you communicate with your Grandfather please advise him that I endeavour to maintaian his tradition whenever time and budget permits.

Here's to the memory of him and all others that are with him.

Thanks for clarifying Walter, I don't think many of us knew what dutch tilt meant :)

Funny I heard that term only a few days ago as well whilst visiting one of the many videographers for our wedding.
And sure enough we saw plenty of dutch tilt as Walter has described :D

Doing the "Dutchy" was a term that we used a lot on a show I worked on many years ago (actually come to think of it....... it was a decade ago!!!)
Now days you don't hear as much in the studios.

Aaah, another Hobart based member. Liked the images on your website Keith, especially the boats in mist ones.
