The UK is full of ancient monuments and while Stonehenge is probably the best known, Avebury in Wiltshire is just as visually stunning and is recognised as a World Heritage Site.

The village of Avebury is encircled by two concentric rings of 5000 year-old standing stones. Most of the stones are 8-10ft high and it is the largest stone circle in the world.

Many of the standing stones were plundered in less enlightened times to build local houses and barns, but a large number of them remain in their original position. In addition to the stones, the village is also surrounded by giant earth fortifications...

Here's a few images in which I tried to capture the majesty of this place...

John, I find your shots stunning, you have seen a lot more of the UK than I did, but also I was working..........great stuff.......

Great pics John, I like the 'simpleness' of the composition, there's only a few objects in the pics but well composed.

I especially like the contrast between the green grass and sky in the second pic.

I like the compositions of the second and third, but that first shot is simply stunning... I take it a circ pol brought out the color? Postcard material there mate!

Lovely shots John - reminded me of when we were there in 2001. Weather was foul but it somehow didn't matter; it matched the spookiness of it all. We didn't even bother getting out of the car in the rain at Stonehenge as I felt Avebury was so much better, less touristy, and CHEAPER (i.e. free).
Did you get any shots at Silbury Hill or the West Kennet Long Barrow? Geez, was that an eerie place!!

Avebury is a remarkable place and I'd love to have been there on a misty morning to take some shots...
Simon, I must have missed the Long Barrow, but Silsbury Hill was quite impressive...

Unfortunately, some of my better Avebury shots were spoilt by leaving my camera on 1600 ISO from the night before... I'm recuing them slowly in PS, but it'll take some time...

These images are really top notch. Nice commentary too John - ever consider a career as a tour guide?

John - Excellent narative and brilliant shots. The main stone in the first one reminds me of a Knight in a game of chess. Love the long shadows and the lighting in the first two, and the third gives a lovely perspective of the size of one of the stones.

Looks like you have some nice weather out there too!

Nice shots.. I like the perspective in the first and the second really gives you and idea of the size and weight of those stones... amazing to think they managed to move and arrange these without the technology we have today...

The colours in these are superb. Especially for wintery old England. I think your choice of composition in the second pic really makes this shot stand out from the others.

Excellent shots! I like the abstract framing that you have gotten and I love the fact that you bypassed the ordinary shots of stone hendge!
