Sunset shots with new toys

Hi,

it's been a while since I last posted some images. Got some nice new toys at Christmas, thanks to BD and Santa :-)

I was determined to find a different spot for sunsets, drove around the lake for a bit till I had to stop because there would be no sunset left  Pelican Pt was the spot, close to the old Belmont airport.

These three were done with the Tokina 12-24.

Handheld, 15mm with fill flash.

Lens wide open with a Hitech .6 ND grad filter, tripod. You will notice a bit of vignetting in the top, that's the Cokin holder for the filter. I used the Cokin WA filter holder. Something to be aware of in the future. I left the vignetting in to show.

Lens wide open as well, but no filter this time. As you can see, the sky is now a lot more overexposed. Not a great photo, but thought I'd put it here to show a bit of difference of the effect of having the filter (PS: I know it is not scientific, should have taken same photo with/without filter :( , next time)

Loved my new benro tripod/head as well. Lots to learn and experiment with the 12-24.

Cheers,

radar
EDIT: not sure why the images don't show up, I'll put links for now.
EDIT2: fixed for now :-)
EDIT3: removed the pixspot reference, use my own site

Andre as I understand it the img tag requires the URL to be a direct image link (ie the URL must end in a file extension like .jpg) rather than a plain vanialla URL

Image #2 is my choice here. The lighting works really well giving an interesting range of colours. For me #1 just doesn't grab me. Too much conflict between the foreground boat on the right and the sunset on the left.

Nice shots Radar, sunsets and sunrises are a problem if you haven't scoped out your possy beforehand.

nice captures Radar, I like the low light levels and the lense appears to be working well for you. I'm sure you are happy!

I like images 1 and 2 andre. Perhaps a little less fill on the foreground boat but I think its great. :)

I really like #1, everyone's different, I like the way the flash forces the first boat to be the primary subject with the sunset becoming a secondary subject. Maybe a smidge less power in the flash, but like the effect...

Also interesting to see the differences the Grad ND filter makes, always good to see examples, thanks...

Thanks for the feedback, I haven't done much flash photography, so I'll have to read up on where the settings are to adjust the power. Had a quick look in Thom Hogan's guide, looks easy enough. I don't have an SB-800/600, so limited to the pop-up. I'll have to read a bit more when I get the time.

I liked the first two photos. I'll have to revisit when I know how to control the flash better. I agree that a bit less power would have made it much nicer.

Lots to learn :-), never ends.

Cheers,

radar PS: Peter, you were correct on the .jpg bit. I'll have to play with my gallery site, for now, I put the photos on pixspot

All very good images. I like#2 most.

Radar - all nice shots and always keep in mind that with a sunset the reflectivity of the land mass is a lot lower than the transmissive light of the sky. :)

Thanks ajax,

Having only briefly used the Nikon 12-24, I can't really compare them. I hope to borrow a friend's Nikkor lens and do a side by side comparison.

As for this one, love it so far :D . It takes 77mm filters, a big plus on the sigma 12-24, for me anyway.

Cheers,
