Deb,

Love the last one, great use of DOF and keeping the shot 'simple' yet affective.
I also like the lighting and texture in the first shot.

The second shot.. doesn't really do much for me...not sure what about it disappoints me.

The 3rd shot has great potential but I think the feet needed to be in focus more (maybe more DOF?) Also in the backgound the bright toys may have been position better for a more finished affect.

Thanks John

Have to say I have been looking at yours with envious eyes...both for the cooler weather and the absolute "wow" factor many of them have for me.

What I like most about this shot is that it is a stark contrast to what was happening only mere centimetres to the left of the image....major construction was taking place by my kids and their dad. The "thing" in the background was the lifesavers chair.

I also like the lighting and texture in the first shot.

This one I am not so sure on, it was originally shot in landscape and I have rotated it.....not 100% happy there yet.

The 3rd shot has great potential but I think the feet needed to be in focus more (maybe more DOF?) Also in the backgound the bright toys may have been position better for a more finished affect.

Thanks for the feedback on this image. Being my son's feet this image has sentimental value to me, so it is always interesting to get others views that have no such attachment. All valid points, but at the time I was more concerned with stopping him from a) doing a face plant into the sand and b) not eating the whole beach. Next time when he is older I will probably have more time to consider your tips, but with him being able to walk by then I will probably be desperately trying to keep him out of the water!

Deb - they are all good but I just LOVE the last one. It has an element of simplicity and complexity enrolled into the one shot - it's a winner for sure. I think the element of it's abstractedness (? word!?) is outstanding and would love to see this enlarged and framed in a gallery (or in a home - a beach home what's more!!). Well done..I am enjoying viewing your work more and more...keep it up!! :)

Deb,

These are excellent, especially the last two. I love the DOF treatment and contrast in the last one.

Well done.

Deb. These are all good, but as has already been said, that last one is great.

Last one is a real keeper Deb. Terrific shot for reasons already stated. I wonder if impact would change if you tried cloning out OOF boat in background although it aint really a problem to overall composition. :)
cheers

Last one is an absolute stunner. Well done!

Second one is also good, I just wonder if it was just a little wider to get the whole stroke in? Not sure.

I must say the last picture turned me off at first. After the comments by everybody else I had another look and must concede it is a pretty good picture.

I guess it invokes images of my own childhood, and my parents' obsession with bringing the right toys (tools?) to the beach. Boy, I dread those ever more elaborate sand-digging toolkits you could buy in those days... Thankfully, kids nowadays just seem to enjoy themelves among sand and waves.

To me, the forgeign unnatural colour of the plastic toy makes a nice contrast to the beach colour scheme.

Cheers
Steffen.

your comment was a fine example of how our personal bias' can/do affect the images we view. Our empathy, or lack thereof, with the subject will always play a major role in whether or not we enjoy the displayed image.

And I have found that even though many might be excited by certain images, I cannot bring myself to reach the same level of appreciation. We don't all see with the same eyes and that is neither good nor bad in the scheme of things.

Sorry to hear that you have horrible memories of the beach and beach toys in particular......let me assure you my kids had an absolute ball.

And thanks for taking the time to have a second look.

Enjoy your day
Deb

I like #2, simple, clean and fun. North Coast NSW all over.
