Marco

You sneaky bugger. That first shot is the image I suggested you could extract from the other pics with some judicious cropping. Didn't think to ask then if you'd done the crop in camera. This works well. The second image is even better though. I really like the golden tonal range.

The curved lines in the second shot really appeal to me.

Great minds think alike I'd like to say Peter :) truth be known I'd taken these 2 shots right when I arrived on that day I shot the waves and I liked the rippling across the water of the first image and the slight break on shore.

I did have a slight breaking wave across the immediate foreground but it created too much of a separation between the 2 elements of the scene so i binned it, figuratively speaking, to be relegated to some play learning in PSCS2. By the way I also toned down the orange(which i thought was too obscenely orange for this type of shot) in the sky with a gray grad.

When you made that comment I thought let me go back to the 'dustbin'
and i decided to crop out the wave and a tad more for balance. And yes you were right you 'old fox' it did look better. Thanks Peter. :)
I eas going to acknowledge the fact when i got back from doing the grocery shopping as I'm still on hols :)

That was the intent Marvin. It pleased you like it :)

Actually when the opportunity presents I like using that diagonal line technique of drawing the viewer from foreground left corner(or right) across the diagonal to a subject in this case the lovely horizon. Got that idea from Z (orro)  Jokes aside it's one of my favourite ways I use leading lines :)

Marco - no need for an acknowledgment the pic was your effort. My comment wasn't seeking acknowledgement, but rather having a dig that you kept quiet about having something better when I suggested the recrop of the other image :D

Don't know about better Peter, perhaps different :) It was still your idea that made me return to it and crop the image  That's on of the choice things about this forum. A bit like the luxury of a third chess player consulting with you, one who can see the moves which you can't because you are too caught up in your own agenda. :)

Gee Marco I'm doing well with my words today  The "better" was comparing the image here to the fairly ordinary result when you recropped the other image rather than saying this one was better than the others in your other post. phew.

I'm not having a go at you Peter, just being cheeky

The point i'm making is that comments such as yours I, and i'm sure i speak for all photogs on this forum wishing to improve their skills, find very useful and informative and in this case in point helped ,me create something out of an also ran. And in any case, as we all do, if i disagree with a particular photogs critique I do what you so rightly alluded too, it's my photograph and i make the final decision  :)

Hi Marco, I really like the second shot too. Were any filters used in getting this?

Cheers,
Owen.

The second image is unreal. Considering I don't live near the beach... how many sunrises look that great? I'm tempted to get up early one day and go have a squizz.

Hi Marco, I really like the second shot too. Were any filters used in getting this?

I'd also love to know.

Cheers,
Tommo.

Thanks OWen, Moggy and Tommo. As i mentioned earlier I did use a Grad Grey Cokin filter to tone down the bright orange and balance out the exposure, but when I had a look I wasn't happy with the effect so I added a little extra with Nik Color Efex Graduated Grey filter plugin and mucked about with the settings till I got the effect I wanted :)

Yeah, second one does it! I think the real winner in this photo is the composition, the diagonal line the beach makes is great leading out into the water and islands/headlands...

I have to agree both are great, but in isolation the second one, the way the wave has been captured, the colours... man let me retire there and I'd be happy, looks like their be plenty of fish there!

#2 for me as well Marco. The curved lines work wonderfully drawing your eye into the shot. Great use of filters as well.
