Another pano attempt.

I've had another go.

I used the Tamron 70-300mm lens again, but this time with the Tamron 1.4x TC. For this kind of photography I find the Tamron sharper than the kit lens (!), and in the case of this photo the kit lens didn't have enough reach anyway. I hope you like it.

Beautiful Doug - I stretched the pano across two screens and could still not see it all in one go :) The combination you used for this shot is testament, once again, not to the equipment used but to the photographer :D

Thanks Nito, I'm pleased you like it. :)

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment. The original I have is around 3000 pixels high and many more wide. The detail is amazing. You'd need a lot of monitors for it. :) It is sharp without sharpening. I had to sharpen the small version on the web, because of the softening that occurs when sizing down, which resulted in slight halos around the trees at the skyline. I think the key to the lens is to know it's limitations and stay within them. Slow focus doesn't matter in a shot like this, nor does camera shake (tripod). Genista just bought the same lens, $200 new. I think that is good value for money when it can take clear, sharp shots, like this. It's not a lens for all photography, but I believe it has it's place (I say that because I can't afford anything else. :) ). For the money, it's very good. :)

Thanks Killakoala! :) I was looking forward to seeing you this Saturday, I'm not sure when I'll next get a chance to.

Thanks for your comments too, Steve. I'm pleased you like it. :)

Thanks Bob. :)

Stephen, this pano was shot at f8, and each shot in the pano was 5 seconds long. I determined my shutter speed by looking at the histogram and trying to get it as close to perfect as I could by doing test shots. This particular pano at full size, has no noise. :) The individual shots were stitched in "The Panorama Factory". Post processing, I added contrast, reduced shadows a little bit, bumped up the saturation, and sharpened after resizing. I had to unfortunately crop a tall ship off the end because it didn't stitch correctly. I may post it separately because I like the shot. The exposure was easy. I was there around 4 hours and did the pano many times. I just chose the set with my preferred lighting to PP. :)

sirhc55, this is for you:

Nice pano here, very nice actually, I would like to do some good panos like this one, I'll have to keep trying.

What resolution/file size(s) did you start with?

Max

Hi Max, the resolution, I'm not sure what you mean. I shot in RAW, with the camera in portrait orientation. I originally took 9 photos (2000 x 3008) to stitch together, but I cropped off the tall ship that was parked there on the right hand side, so it isn't so wide now.

The drawback with panos I think, is that it's best to view them large, so print is I guess the best medium. The original size has great detail, the one linked to my website has fairly good detail, the little one posted here is pathetic. :) The trees look like a sillouette. In the original, you can clearly see the leaves. :)

I am impressed with what you have acheived with the Tameron 70-300 and a 1.4 TC. It seems so sharp.

Great work Love it

You have answered my question. My little ibook just could not handle 9 raw images, it would take all day to stitch. On the other hand, the way you have done it means you would have a nice size image to make a big crisp print from.

Many thanks.

lol John! I'm only a newbie and don't deserve that title. This is my 2nd pano, and I am already scratching my head to think of something else to glue together. :)

Thanks Doug! It's good to be back, but I think I'll just ease myself in, can't see me getting through 3000 posts in one night. If I can I'll keep you a slice of B'day cake!

MATT, sorry I didn't thank you sooner for your comments, I missed your post. The Tamron is not so bad when there is little movement in the photo. :) Off the tripod it can be soft, but it's not the lens' fault. It is the photographer's fault for not holding the camera still enough. ;)

Ozimax, I just want to clarify that although I shot RAW, I saved as tiffs, and stitched them as tiffs. I didn't stitch in RAW. In any case, the tiffs are much bigger in file size than the RAW files, and were a real strain on my PC.
