Taken last night, with SB600 - at night, insects find spots to go to 'sleep', and are easy to sneak up on and get shots :)

Amazing stuff Rel, really great.

Do they wake up ? I'm sure I'd be pretty disorted and a little annoyed if I was sleeping then got flashed by the SB-800.

Nice images, did you have much trouble finding bugs in the dark? I've heard some people wear those forehead lamps and look for bug-eye reflections..

You might want to try diffusing the flash a little so the shadows and highlights are less harsh. Also, maybe add a reflector or another flash to the side to fill the shadows and show some form.

I'm looking forward to more macros ;) .

Rel - they are fantastic!
The first one really stands out as a clear 'winner' to me!
Well done!!
Keep on posting!! Love your work!

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Alpha - they do stir, so I know they are aware that I'm there, but they don't fly off like they would during the day

Xorl - yep, was wearing my requisite headlamp :) We are in the middle of a survey, and had finished putting out traps, and had gone back in at night to spotlight (birds/possums/rats etc). Agreed on shadow and highlight probs, but was supposed to be working ;)

Geoff, Bob & Steve - thanks :)

Hehe, I wish my work environment was that (photographically) interesting ;). I've been wondering how well the headlamp tricks works, after seeing this I really must try it.

Beautiful Rel. Love the dragonfly my only comment would be to clone out the grass stalk behind it to isolate the dragonfly evenmore. The other point is I'm glad you don't find humans as interesting to photograph. I'd dread the thought of Rel with her patient partner and 500million watt spotlight coming around in the middle of the night taking photos
Lovely images Rel :)
cheers

Fantastic shots Rel,

The dragon fly looks like it was taken during daylight.

Cheers

Narelle.

What can I say? Upto your usual high standard. Dragonfly is brilliant (maybe I'd also P'shop blade of grass). Butterflies are well composed, sharp, great depth of field and set off beautifully against background.

Keep up the stunning work!

Cheers

Michael

Mark 1, Mark 2, Birdy, Marco, Warwick, Michael & Big Red - thanks for the comments :) A headlamp is well worth every penny you'll spend on it - and you can pretend you are one of the seven dwarves that have just come back home from working down a mine :) (OMG - I think the codral is doing evil things to my mind). And how do you know I don't lurk around peoples' houses, just waiting to blind them with my spotlight, and take their photo ????? LOL Fair enough, if I did, I'd be on the news and in jail !!!!! ;)

Wocka - haven't forgotten about your shots, will send them through in the next couple of days (sorry, been laid up in bed).

And BigRed - at night, while holding a spotty in one hand, with the other light on head, and juggling a camera, autofocus is a real winner ;)

Thanks again :)
