A shot from last Sunday evening…

This is Wellington Point, a narrow spur jutting into Moreton Bay and a popular spot with locals for boating, fishing, beach-combing, wind- and parasurfing. At low tide you can work out almost a kilometre to nearby King Island.

The attached shots are of my daughters admiring the dusk sky. I’ve done no PP except for some minor sharpening and the obvious B&W conversion.

I’d just like some opinions – Colour, B&W or the shot’s that bad no colour treatment is going to save it???

Colours composition are delightful whilst the B&W one ads a new dimension. My comment would be that I'd like to see yoour 2 girls loom larger in the composition. Getting in closer use a shorter focal length. This way you could also rexsolve the issue, of what IMO is a little too much void/darkness in the bottom of the frame that does tend to draw the eyes away from the main composition.

Thanks for that Marco. I didn't want to get my feet wet! The foreground held more detail than shows up in the shot - I even tried to resurrect it a bit with a different exposure in Camera Raw but it was still too dark to save. I'm a bit loathe to crop the image but.... it may have to be done. The original idea however was to dwarf them against the expanse of sky.

Simon I like this but perhaps a tighter crop would make more use of the people in the shot, which I think adds interest.

Something very fragile and beautiful about this image. It has a timeless quality and the clouds have such a light touch in the universe.

I'll do some crop work and see how the emphasis changes....

How's this:

I love the image and think that it has been improved by cropping out the black area at the bottom. I prefer the colour version.

I think the small size of the figures emphasises the vastness of the sky.

I really like this shot and the crop is improves it. I disagree with the suggest from marco about the girls looming larger. I love it how small, innocent and fragile they appear compared to nature.

I think the coloured is more emotive, the tone variation is consistent with an image that should be treated as a colour
usually black and white images have more obvious contrasts

your image is much more neutral soit needs the colour to give it that punch

Thanks Shane - glad you like it. I imagine you could get some similar shots down your way though, if the mozzies at Wello Point were anything to go by perhaps you'd just better stay inside!! I gave several litres of blood that evening but I don't think the Red Cross saw much of it.

Thank you Wendell. I agree with you about the tones. There's not nearly enough contrast in the shot to carry off the black and white. Now if there were some nice angry storm clouds in the sky....

I'm with Matt on his comments, and agree with Alpha - there is a certain innocence that almost adds a mystical quality to the shot.
Congrats on capturing a piece of mother nature at her best and softest.
