Thought I would try something different from Mrs Macquires Chair this evening.

Which do you prefer?

1st one bill being a much cleaner image

First one for me too Bill. I would have had to think about it had the #2 image foreground interest been a tall ship in the evening glow It's a beautiful shot

The second one is interesting, but the first one is probably the better of the two.

I'll be different and go #2.

Your main subject in both images only fills a small portion of the frame and there is nothing truly dynamic in the subject itself. For this reason, the rest of the frame needs to hold some information for the viewer or they will quickly lose interest in the image.

#1 The large expanse of sky is too plain and has no detail to keep me fixed on it . A quick glance at the bridge and the opera house and I'm done! bye bye

#2 Suddenly, we have 3 elements to the image. Main subject, sky above with clouds to give some detail and foreground info to finish things off. Maybe the foreground info could have been lit a little better or had some better elements but on a whole, I think this image will keep a viewers attention longer and is overall the better shot.

After the other recent thread, bare/bear in mind it's only my opinion!

Edit: Best option would be to crop square on #1 but I know this is unheard of these days!

I prefer #1 - the sky is much more interesting than the foreground (rock, monument, railing) in #2.

I'll have to go number one for clarity and colour.... however, if the second shot had something more interesting in the foreground i'd say that it would win hands down...

Definitely #1. Nice use of negative space, and also a touch of the "can also be broken" rule of thirds. Excellent lighting and all in all a good image.

If the second image had a small boy standing on the rock looking over the harbour, then that would have been a better image. But as you cannot go around the city purloining small boys (well, not without getting arrested), you did well with what you had to work with!
