Got out today with a great teacher (JordanP) and got some shots with my 50mm 1.4...here are the results:

Critique please

I PP'd a filter through this with photoshop, but I quite like the outcome

Geoff.

Very nice if a little on the flourescent side like they're in a space ship or something. I'm not sure if I really like the color/filter, but it is eyecatching and unusual. Wow, is that motion blur or depth of field on the picture with the girl and the rope?
All very nice shots, I think I'd prefer them in color though IMHO.

Geoff, they are great shots. I like the PP effects and the colourings, the bluish ones have an interesting quality. The family shot may look even better with a touch of sepia - it has an old fashioned look about it (in a good way) and the sepia could add to it.

				Nice stuff mate

I’ll have to get JP to give me a few pointers

“I hear he’s got a few pointers for me already when he gets here”

Love the motion blur in the last one it really adds to the Sean.
Cheers
Ray

Remember, it's a Nikon 50/1.4 not 1.8.

Is time to to ditch the 1.8 and lust the 1.4?

Hey Geoff, excellent images. Looking at them, I was gunna ask how you made the 50/1.4 renounced for sharp pics take soft look photos. Then I read down the bottom you used a filter - was this the digital photographer thing that Craig spoke of?

Yeah..I'm at work at the moment, can't quite remember the name of the plugin filter..optiek opitiverve or something similar. I have had one of the most enjoyable (unti I came to work today) week ends in a long time. SPending time with Craig (JordanP) has been totally awesome. Not only is he an amazing photographer but also a genuinely nice guy with a great temperament..this is not a reference but hey..he's cool!

No Birdy, no. An extra f0.4 on my 50mm will not change my life

I am lusting the 60 or 105 macro, this is my lust.

Nice images. Good glass! I think there is a link to that filter, (optikverve) on this forum. It has a large number of filters that are nicely embedded into Photoshop and it's freeee!

I was a litle weary of the "do everything with just 1 click" claims the first time it was posted, but if it's recommended by Mattk and JordanP, and illustrated by Geoff (no C, just Geoff) - I think it's high time I tried it out. Thanks for the link Matt.

The 60 micro looks interesting, especially if the price doesn't skyrocket.

I particuarly liked the group shot. Very natural, great lighting and excellent conversion to B&W

Ok this might be a stupid question (prepares for stupid answers!!!)
But in the above shot did you rotate it in Photoshop or did you shot at this angle?
I must admit I have never taken a photo other than in landscape or portrait so I don't know what the outcome would be (I must start experimenting!!!)

Not a stupid question at all Woody - I shot at this angle to attempt a more 'arty' feel to it. Not sure what I think yet

I noticed a few images Geoff took on friday were also at an angle. I must try that too sometime. I think you filled the frame nicely with that one, although the dark bit at the top left corner is a bit of a distraction considering the rest of the background is high key.

I don't normally like angle shots, but I have to say this one works Geoff.
Onyx - your sig, I believe, should read:-
"I am not as think as you drunk I am."

I'm not usually a fan of overtly arty shots either, but these seem more emotional than arty to me. I think they work really well - crisp, yet soft (in a good way) if you know what I mean.

Well I like it, I think it has worked very well.
I will be trying this out with my little niece next time I see her.
