Caught this one out in the garden amongst the millions of toads.. im suprised really... but he was croakin his nut off.. im not super happy with the photos.. but i finally got a frog infront of the lens (practise?)

Yeah Tim He's a nice old bugger isn't he? By the looks of him, he's been around a while too !!!! Nice shots - but I have a question - you have the SB800, so I'm not sure why your shots are quite dark...... what settings did you use? First shot is great - but I would have prefered if you kept the legs in the shot - the lighting a little too dark .. but you may be able to pick it up in PS.

Hey Rel, im shooting at f22, 1/300th and sb800 set on ttl.. i had an assistant on these photos... and unfortunately they were holding a torch on him and im thinking it possibly threw the SB800 off balance and caused it to not fire as bright or something along those lines because normally it works perfectly when i only have just enough light to focus but not illuminate the subject.. and also with them panicking about the frog jumping off and constantly worrying about the mosi's eating us alive i only got a few photos... if he's still our there later ill work on it a bit more..

p.s. still heaps of friggen toads, i picked up 70 toadlings this afternoon just walking around the backyard....

Great effort on frog shots but I agree with Rel that they are a bit dark. I have spent many nights photographing frogs and your torch definitely wouldn't throw out SB800 as flash is soooo much more powerful. Try checking settings on camera/flash first and maybe using beercup/diffuser and on TTL if close or full flash at a distance. I agree with Rel about chopping legs off in number one shot, too.

the torch i was using was pretty bright.. and im thinking it might of fooled the metering but maybe its just user error, or maybe i should stick to bloody toads!

actually I dont mind the darker portraits of the frog.
still nice and sharp, just a little different than some of the others I have seen here.

Tim - this I love !!!! Very "wind in the willows" The beautiful soft background and OOF grass - and peering through the grass to get the shot - this is a photo to be proud of (IMO) - I'm assuming you were laying in the grass with this delightful character, asking him to lightly grasp the grass stem, and throw a dignified pose? I must say though, this is one individual I hope you didn't kill tonight - he gave you a beautiful photo - hopefully he received a one night reprieve in return?

i gave him a smack around the noggin but i didnt kill him, killed a few others tho, glad you like him Rel... he was only a small toad and thats exactly how he was sitting when i spotted him..

p.s. that frog, when i found him, he was dark brown.. but as i took some photos of him, he slowly started turning a very dark green

The green frog is Litoria caerulea - common name the green tree frog (how original ) They vary in colour big time - I've had them grey, and Damian has seen them blue (ie greeny blue) - and can change colour as you watch - as you saw - it's all to do with the way they constrict the cuticular cells - they can shunt the pigment around the cells (much like geckos can change colour).... pretty cool huh?

Great shot of the toad, I love the lighting and colour.

I'm thinking maybe i should leave the frog shots to Rel and make a name for myself for toad photos
