As a piece of photoshop work, this looks pretty good for someone who's just started playing with it. There are just one or two spots where the spider's hair needed a big more attention to detail to be sharply isolated.

Overall, a well-executed shot like this would have some applications (perhaps a pop-style shoot for a magazine), but I have to say that my preference is for photoshopping that subtly enhances the picture and cannot be detected afterwards except by the most discerning eye.

Of course this kind of subtlety is not the kind of fun one looks for in a new toy :)

This was just playing. I firstly used a gradiant backgrund, applied a dozen or so filters for fun, found a crap photo of a rose and melted it over the top and then added some rainbow circles. I used the spider only because it was the first photo of mine that had a high contrast background so I could use the magnetic lasso. It's a 100% crop of the spider.

Photoshop is a great little toy. Just scratched the surface me thinks.
