Here is another one of my industrial photographs from this evning , it was -20 degrees F which is about -40 Celcius around that area i th ink and my D70s handled well even though it was warming in the car, unfortunatly i only got this one photo off before security came and told me it was illegal to photograph a refinery even on public property, I wonder if this is the same in australia? I live in the US, minnesota,
Comments are appreciated!
Thanks!

That's a great pic and for a one off exceptionally well exposed.
On the question of photographing refineries, there was a recent news story here about a group of camera buffs doing just that who were heavied by security, including police turning up at one guy's home. Upshot of all this was the government came out and said that it was crazy to stop people taking such pics and that the law allowed them to be taken.

Great Shot William! The cold sounds great.... it seems to really clean the air (atmospherically speaking).
As I understand it the "Rent A Cops" really have no power whatsoever. Most of what they get away with is bluff.
They are not Policemen and have no powers as Police have. We all tend to give in to them as it is an easier way of doing things.
I believe that over here, store security for example can ask you to empty your pockets if they suspect shop lifting but can't make you do so. They cannot hold you until the police arrive, however, they can follow you and report your position to the police along the way. At the end of the day, people are intimidated into doing things that they do not have to.

Tony

Very dramatic shot.
I wonder if you asked security to quote the exact "letter of the law" ?
In Australia it is not illiegal to shoot like this from a public area. Although a camera club member reported by security to the police for doing just this. The police then visited his home and told him not to take photographs like this and to pass on that instruction to the other camera club members. Legally the cops did not have a leg to stand on, it was all bluff.

Great shot, as Wendell said...Blade Runner'esque.
You should go to Stockton'on'Tees or Middlesbrough to get the real thing
I went up to there to visit a friend and I thought it was a hole, my mate who I was visiting told me that parts of Bladerunner were filmed there.

Nice shot William, you've captured the industriality

of the scene beautifully. & if that's 1.5 sec exposure, I'd hate to sleep in that neighbourhood

William,
Refineries are not noted for their beauty generally and you have done a wonderful job in capturing the lighting, smoke/steam etc. The black framing sets it off well.
Nice work

William,
Excellent photo, perfectly exposed (as others have said). Sometimes it doesn't feel so bad being a chemist.

The end results were worth enduring the weather conditions... Great subject and well framed. All the steam(?) clouds in the sky and the lighting make the image very dramatic.
There have been incidents recently involving security and well intentioned photographers...
You've really captured the industrial feel, well done.

Awesome photo William. You've created a real sense of atmosphere with some thoughtful composition and excellent exposure - AND you did it with just one shot. Having said all that, I don't know that I'd use it for a motivational poster though...
