Found myself working today for the management of the Miss Indy girls. So far from my usual haunts but it was a hell of a lot of fun. This is Jana Peterson, the current Miss Indy. I was aiming for shooting a candid shot but she spyed me and shot this smile over. The conditions were horrid, very varied light sources, some ultra hot and really clashing with the flash, left the white balance at auto shot RAW and crossed my fingers, there was also a lot of jostling from the heap of punters wanting to take pics with bloody mobile phones. Seriously, what a pain, that kids think they can walk in front of your shot and push you to get their mobiles in the models face/cleavage/crotch. That these girls put up with this shite is truly amazing sometimes.

you've got to feel sorry for these girls though, they get put through so much and it doesnt always lead anywhere.

mate I had the girls for about 5min gathered around one of the Team Australia Champ Cars but the lighting for freakin awful and pretty damned hard to work with. The girls were patient though (thankfully) and I am now certain that my on camera histograms look far more blown out than my raw capture programs say they are. Next time I'll push the SB800 a bit harder and use the inflatable diffuser.

Also, next time I'll also get pushy with the public to get where I want to be on the front of the catwalk.

Nice. You did very well considering the lighting problems. I'd add some colour to her face though.

yeah mark know what you mean when your under pressure covering an event doesn't matter how good you are it's hard taking a good shot

at Loreal i bodged up so many runway shows even though i had my technique perfected, pressure changes everything

Another thing I've got to do is buy a big bracket for the flash that has a decent reach, and somehow get my mits on an SC29. Using te SB800 on camera threw some really harsh shadows and dumped some really nasty forehead glare on a few of the shots.

Hi Mark,
Get yourself a Lightsphere PJ... Shadows will disappear and it's a lot cheaper than a flash bracket and SC-29

I currently have an inflatable softbox (pretty much weightless and it works really well) that is gaffed to the SB600 but since I was shooting with the sb800 that a friend loaned to me, I didnt want to gaff that up. Blowing up an inflatable flash attachment can look pretty strange to people who dont know what you are doing as well. lol

I'd much prefer to use a flash bracket and the inflatable softbox together though. They are only $45 through ebay so I'll be likely to make that my next purchase, followed by the Zeiss 55mm f1.4
