Last week I was fortunate enough to photograph Loreal Fashion Week, I have done Mercedes Fashion week last year but this time i covered alot more in variable circumstances. I am truly humbled by the whole experience as i chatted with the other pros from the newspapers, Vogue and Harpers along with models, staff and visiting celebrities, everyone was so nice.

Sunday 26th feb Loreal fashion festival Launch at Government House, Melbourne. It was such a lovely day, goverment house courtyard was setup for a 1920-30's style elegant soire


Before the festivities though Media needed to do a mini model promo shoot with the models of Loreal fashion week, no planning no reflectors just on the fly model shooting, the legendary Brad Hick the official photographer(6six photography) directed the shoot, I shot from the side.

2nd shot, brad hick(official photographer) in the middle models gettign ready, Brad wanted a catwalk scene, models walking towards him with the melbourne skyline in the background, models were backlit by the sun so shooting was hard, i shot this whole sequence with the 70-200 VR with fill flash

this sequence got 3 revisits


Time for portraits, some other photographer got artisitic direction so i had to shoot candids




the highlight meeting cathy freeman, she was a legend. I just greated her said she looked great and chatted about the weather damn i neglected to say how she was a legendary australian icon an inspiration to all, regardless she was really nice and we talked a little more mainly about fashion, then the other media came and that was the end of that, i managed to get her first because the other media were busy shooting the models.


There were around 30+ shows numerous afterparties and other related events in melbourne last week and i took home 30gig worth, now the daunting task of editing and submission for publication.

Melbourne was a blast it's an absolute pleasure to visit everyone is sooo nice!!, it must be the water or something.

no sleep for the wicked Alex, if i learned one thing the other photogaphers at Lorean are driven, they are totally serious. With Cream amagazine i have two weeks for photo submissions, but Brad Hick is comissioned by 10 companies to shoot the event he has a number of people working for him editing and submitting photos. He has to get images up on the lmff site within a 24 hour after each show - crazy! considering he shoots hundreds per show. Another guy from Getty images shot the runway and at the end he uploaded his perfect images to the getty worldwide server via his laptop, these guys are fast and serious.

These tasks are easy if you want to spend more and do it more seriously.
With this modern day, all are doable and you don't need to sit down to run all your pp, that how all the Pro shooters did in many events.

Shoot, fill up the cards anfd someone hand you a new cards, all done in the background and images up to their servers.

Are you serious in this game? it's your choice and answer.

And please tell me:
What are you going to do if your D2x dies when you arrive or just in the middle of shooting an event?

Guess? what does your customer(s) feel? if they have all setup for the shooting of their products and your D2x does not want to join the game.

Do you know that in some contracts you have to reimburse your customer all their expenses if the faults are on your side?

Birdy is right on on all counts. You have an assistant or three to handle the PP while you're shooting, and you have at least one spare body hanging around your neck ready to leap into action if needed.

But we actually noticed you shooting during the week too: on the Sydney news they had a couple of breaks for the L'Oreal Fashion Week, and they showed some of the models walking the (cat)walk.

We looked specifically for the times when there were no flashes going off, clearly indicating that you were taking photos at that time.

Birdy your right, but i am in a different league to the other guys they need quick turnarounds because they work for the papers and photo press agences which require that the images be provided right away, with cream it's a monthly publication so they are happy with whatever i provide within thier longish deadlines. One day i will get more serious I will obtain 3 bodies have two assistants an 'access all areas' pass and a online photo image library for media that I can update anytime but for now I am content in the manner in which i do these events.

wasn't expected to cover the event like brad hick but using 1 body with no assistants i felt the struggle to keep up.

Gary your funny, I actually semi fixed my flash it does flash but only at full intensity and now the display doesn't shift no matter what i press, i have to point the flash upwards and use the difusser to minimize it's effect.

It is very interesting to hear how it all works behind the scenes Wendle. And that model in the white baby doll dress is quite drool worthy. More of her please!

Im with Rob on this one i too love to perv, but mainly to see what you have come up with next and you never dissapoint that your shots are just bloody great.
