I might be totally wrong, but it looks like a Golden Orb Weaver to me... Not sure why the abdomen is so white - probably at a particular stage in its life... Wait for further confirmation though...

I think that you are correct with the ID. I found a site that has lots of pix of the bugs found around Brisbane and it certainly looks like the one.
