Wedding Party... practice shots

Happened upon a wedding party (two acutally!) having their photo sessions on Saturday afternoon. The photographer was more than happy for me to take some pics, which was a great opportunity to practice.

All natural light, fill flash would have been really helpful but I didn't want to interfere with the pro photogs so they are all available light.

Taken with the humble 70-300mm Tamron which I thought coped really well.

Judy, fantastic work. I'm a little surprised you didn't have any issues 'crashing the party' so to speak, must of been a nice photographer.

There are a few standout images there that any couple would love to have in their album, well done. (Did you know any of the wedding party, or are they all strangers ? sounds more like they are strangers) I might be nice to show the bride and groom your shots if you can.

Hey they are some really fantastic shots. Being wedding shots I think some of them could do with a deeper blue sky to make them look just that little bit better.

Nope, I didn't know the wedding party at all. I think the photogs might have been a husband and wife team... only spoke to the woman, and she was really nice. I got her email address and have sent the links of what I've PP'd but haven't heard anything back from them. Thought they might like a couple of the candids as I tried to take a variety of ones they weren't taking. Had a ball

The sky is a bit washed out in some as the back lighting was quite strong and I was trying to expose for detail on the people. We were getting the late sun, so the soft blue is actually quite true to life where it's not overexposed. I stayed on till after sunset and got a few nice pics then as well... soft pinks and blues.

Will PP some of the other wedding soon - didn't get as many shots, but they had two gorgeous little flower girls and two little boys all dollied up in tuxes etc. Looked amazing.

Brilliant work Judy!!

Great to see paid photogs letting you get in on the action... just been reading 6 pages of whinging on another photography forum by a "pro" photog who got upset that "Wannabes" got in his way...

In the end, he had no reason to whinge, he got paid and his photos came out out of focus and shocking.. and got "shreded" by other members on that forum because of the way he conducted himself

So its always good to see and hear of paid photographers allowing someone standing nearby with a SLR camera stand in and take a couple of photos...

My first post, so hi everyone.

Judy you have got an eye for candid composition. They are composed quite well. If anything i think the contrast is a little low. Not sure if it's the lens or PP. But that is easily adjusted in PS.

As far as allowing family and friends room to take photos, we always welcome it. We actually make room for it after we have finished what we are doing and call up the paparazzi.

At the last wedding I saw a brother of the bride taking photos at night with his built in D70 flash. I gave him one of my spare SB800's and a few tips and he loved it so much he was going to go out and buy one the next day. Shame i don't work for Nikon.

Tim - it was great to be able to take so many. I didn't speak to the guy, he was taking most of the pics. The lady was really nice, she even looked quite surprised that I bothered to ask if I could take some shots. She was quite happy, I also asked if she thought the bride would mind and she replied that she thought they would be flattered at the interest I kept well out of the way and didn't use the flash at all.

Steve - haha, I thought the same. All the guys had their hair done in a similar 'style' - don't know who's bright idea that was!

Padey - wow, thanks for that. Just off to work, but I'll check out your pics tonight. I really appreciate the photogs letting me have a play - great learning opportunity. I'm glad I had the courage to ask if I could.

Thank you Wendell... as you mentioned they were all available light. I can't take credit for any of the poses in the more formal ones though, as the photog was in charge of all that. Quite a few of them are real candids though as I was trying to catch some nice 'moments' while the photog was busy.

Judy - As you can imagine composition is quite challenging at weddings because you are rarely at the same place twice. Completely different to studio work. By the looks of it you have an eye for it.

Camera craft you can learn, but composition is an art. Top stuff.

Alpha_7 - I've been doing them professionally for 5 years. Before that I worked for a few car magazines. But I got sick of taking photos of cars, bras and handlebars.

Geoff - I hope you don't mind that my partner shoots from the dark side; Canon 5D's. Changed your mind???? lol
