G'Day Everyone,

I have been playing with my Canon DSLR for a couple of months, been on a photographic workshop and finally have something worth posting on a forrum. Please critique and I am thick skinned  and wanna improve my composition and photo skills. All images have been PP with CS2 a bit of levels, curves, hue/saturation

Image 1
Tried to keep in mind the foreground, middleground and background rule
Image

Image 2
Didnt want the surf to be blurred, however it does give a sense of movement to the image.

Image 3
Debris washed ashore.

Any and all inputs welcome.
Cheers
Makario

Hi Makario,

Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy your stay, I'm sure you'll find us friendly and there is always so much to learn! :)

#3 Doesn't hold much interest for me

#1 I can tell you applied the rules, but the subject lacks punch or interest

#2 This is the definite winner for me, the blurr is an interesting affect in itself, but I think this shot really works for me.

Hey maakiro, dont always follow the rules. Just look at a scene and try and photograph it the way you see it.

I think the 2nd image is the one with the best compostion. Somethig like that hung up on your wall is good if it reminds you of a holiday that you were on etc.

A nice 10-22 or 17mm 'ish lens would work well with a #2 type shot that way you could show the beach and water you walked along to get there from a wider perspective.

I'll be a band wagon jumper and say I like the second the best, first shot advice.......get up early and take again......or late afternoon.......nothing like a bit of warm glow to accentuate your capture

Great. I voted for No.2 also before reading other responses.

G'day Makario,

My feeble attempt to critique...

#1, There doesn't seem to be a primary subject of focus, exposure's a smidge hot (as in a bit too far right on your histogram) so some of the highlights appear clipped, try reducing yoru exposure in CS2 a smidge, (maybe .3EV or so?) just to ease the highlights in the water and the rocks. The water as a middle-ground item has nice texture but no single subject for your eyes to settle on, foreground and background seem disconnected... My eyes seem to follow the foreground rocks and white water and run off the edge on the right

#2, Ahhh, this is nice, I like the movement in the water it works well here, might try getting down lower for one of these to give more "depth" to the scene, getting down low might also help emphasise the shadows too. Definately the pick of the bunch... Make me another for #2 :)

#3, It's always interesting to see the every day items from a different viewpoint, wonder if a different framing might help to reduce the number of items in the image, it just seems a bit busy... The unsettled sand is catching the light too and creating highlights to take your eye away from the subject...

Cheers mate, good stuff, keep posting...

Which workshop was it? This looks like Wilson's Prom...

Love the second picture, would also look great hanging on my wall (nearly the same colour as the sand).

Nicely done! :)

G'day Everyone,

Wow this site is really ALIVE... Thanks all for your valuable feedback.

Mudder: This is at Squeaky beach at Wilson Prom, howeve not at a workshop, but went with the family after the High Country workshop. They got a BIT annoyed with me cause I was holding back the group... next time just me, my camera and lenses... er.. maybe the misses as an after thought :)

Thanks again
Cheers
Makario

i prefer the 2nd pic, tho from a lower angle with the footprints leading into the horizon may have created a better feel to the pic.

Hi Makario and welcome to the forum.

The first shot really doesn't do anything for me - there's no real point of interest (to my eye at least). The second is a cracker and should be hanging on your wall. Great use of movement and composition. Well done. You've obviously got a very good eye. The third is okay, but there's too many things competing for my attention.

Welcome to the forum. Just in case you haven't got the idea already  I'd like to add my voice to the chorus that says #2 is best. Why? Unlike the other two it has a strong central element in the footprints to grab my eye.and the image is made stronger by the surging wave that's about to obliterate them. Taken together this makes the image work. Of course that doesn't mean it couldn't have been better eg as Leigh has mentioned, the blurry wave is a distraction and so this would have been better if sharper (so a faster shutter speed).
