Took this a while back.

Got as close as a pair of shorts and tee would allow, the heat was amazing.
By this stage they had given up trying to get it out and it was basically just spray water on anything that wasn’t burning. The monitor just next to the stack of steaming wood had been turned off as it was doing nothing, quite amazing to see the stream of water that had been coming from that and directed straight into the fire start to steam about a metre before it hit the fire. In the end the building virtually disappeared as it buckled and slowly seemed to melt into the fire.

awesome picture! i think itd be pretty cool also if you had a cropped version or so with the firefighters sillouhetted agaist the orange fire! But i like this picture a lot also!

what were the exposures?

like the fact that the firefighters are like silhouettes. adds a touch of art to the shot.

The place was a timber yard; the main fire was stacked piles of wood similar to the piles that are still visible.
A lot of the timber was on pine pallets so I presume the stacks fell as the pine burnt quickly. To the right the yard was filled with timber right up to behind where I took the photo, the fenced bit contained another building that was getting some serious heat and the two guys in the photo alternated between cooling the building and whatever was behind it.
Two pumps were there when I arrived, one at the entrance and one on the road. 24 hours later and it was still smoking and steaming.

Details of the photo I’m cant say right now, original is at home and I’m at work. I know I played around a bit as the initial shots the actual fire was too bright and had no colour or detail. I tried fill in flash, but the effect didn’t really work as it just lit up the reflective strips on the uniforms, and one of those shots was taken as the incident controller was down having a look and issuing orders, caught him as he turned away from the fire, he saw the flash of the camera which caused him to get a firefighter to ask me to move out of the danger area and that was the end of it.
