Wedding Practice Pics - UPDATE

If anyone is interested, thought I'd post my news.

Just been talking to the photogs of the first wedding from last weekend and they've invited me to go along with them to a couple of their weddings to take candids etc, with a view to possibly helping out as a second photog if all goes well.

Whoopie! I'm quite excited (not to mention nervous), never expected all this. They loved the pics. Had a great chat tonight, great couple, I think we'll get along well.

Can't believe how things have progressed.

Still on a high :D

Thanks again for all the positive feedback everyone, gives me a lot more faith in myself.

Cheers
Judy

Congratulations Judy, that is excellent news, I hope it works out well for you. Look forward to seeing more shots (if you'll be allowed to shoot them).

That is awsome news Judy - you have every right to be on a high. You've taken some amazing images and they respect you for that, it's also great that they are such a nice couple. Be confident, and help them out by all means, but don't let them use you. It doesn't sound likely but if you're taking great images then you deserve to be rewarded for this. Again - congratulations!

Congrats. Enjoy yourself, you'll learn a lot.

As things go on, you may want to consider the tools you use. Working glass and hobby glass have some fundamental differences.

Thanks everyone!

Padey - I can't bear to think about it, no way I can afford decent glass. If things progress and it does become a paid job you can guess where the funds will be going for starters.

Rel has let me play with her Nikkor 105 macro (I think she's trying to convert me!). It would be a serious consideration, nice distance for portraits too. Any comments on that idea welcome.

Another thought is the 85mm, I've got an old F2 that I really like and would love to get a recent version of. The glass is brilliant, but auto would be much easier than pfaffing around with all manual.

Then again, a zoom is real handy. Could do with an SB800 too. LOL, I'll worry about all that if and when I need to.

Cheers
Judy

Great stuff Judy

It is great when you can capture with no pressure.

Make sure you get a written info, about rights to the images.

Well done Judy.

It is great to see what can be done by being confident in your own ability and fronting up to people. You, created your own opportunity I hope it continues to grow for you.

Nice lens. Good length for headshots without actually getting in someone's face. I find the short ones just intimidate people if I'm looking for candids unless I go for a lot of context (which is tricky in wedding situations, usually the surroundings are not very photogenic).

But start with a zoom, otherwise you'll be constantly tripping over people as you try to compose. Or you'll have to crop like heck to get a nice composition and that will be the one shot that someone wants printed 20x30".

Thanks again everyone - still really chuffed about all this.

I really appreciate all the good advice as well, will definitely keep these tips in mind.

As far as lenses go, a zoom sure is more versatile so probably a better way to go for starters.

Best
