?? Wasp Face

Found this couple at the back fence this morning. They were very cooperative with their pose despite being somewhat occupied.

Comments and suggestion for improvement welcome

A species ID would be great if anyone can help out as well.

Hey Steve - they are actually moths of the Superfamily Noctuoidea, family Arctiidae - but I'm unsure of the genus or species (sorry). Members of this group are 'aposematically' coloured - warning colours of red/orange/black etc, and are either distasteful to predators, or mimic species that are distasteful.

The pair that you've photographed are in cop, or are mating :)

Thanks Rel. I have had a look at the Australian Museum Online Site and confirmed as much as you told me. Will keep hunting
