Feedback for a beginner (Dial-up warning)

Hello all,
I'm really just starting out with digital photography, and for that matter photography at all really. I'd love to get some feedback on some of my photos, though. At the moment I'm not terribly familiary with Photoshop or the like, and really am just starting out - so please be kind!!! The camera I'm using at the moment is pretty good, but not by any means fantastic (Nikon Coolpix 5700 - 'SLR-like'); really just for a keen beginner with a low (read: I'm a student) budget. Most of these photos were taken during my summer spent in the USA, with also a few from Taipei, one from the backyard, and one of my nephew (and brother-in-law).

G'day,

Welcome and good stuff for posting images in your first post! Good stuff :)

You've got a very good creative eye, if you're just starting out then I really look forward to more of your stuff once you've become more familiar with the tools...

#1 is a very interesting shot, the framing of the subjects is quite good with the people and the bird, (were you waiting for the bird to enter the frame?).A bit of dead space on the right, if you moved the frame a little left so the person standing on the left was a bit more to the right in the frame, the compositon would have been even better and you'd avoid the dead space on the RHS. Easy way out, just crop a bit off the RHS...

#2, Hey I like this... The thing that grabs me is the almost spotlight effect at the base of the mountains, looks really cool...

#3, Terrific subject, nice foreground interest with the tree branches, good framing, good stuff

#4, While I nice image, the plain sky lacks the texture seen in teh other shots with sky, a plain blue sky really needs "something"... Clouds give great texture and shape to a landscape...

#5, Not sure...

#6, Interesting abstract, industrial feel...

#7, (Phew, there's a few there)... This I like, has a fleeting, rat-race feel, quick make more money in Wall Street, greed is good sort of thing, dunno why...

#8, Yes! Interesting and creative, good eye...

#9, Good framing, just needs a bit more room on the left of the street light I think, I'd like to see the street lights (and traffic lights) become your foreground subject with the Chrysler building (I assume?) your background subject

#10, Touching, very, very nice. You see the little things, very nice...

Damn, work phone-call, but I'm not losing what I've typed in  I'll come back :)

Firstly, Welcome to the forum.

You've captured many aspects of the US landscape well in this series.

A fair few of us here have started out in Coolpix land before the D70/D100 became available/affordable. The 5700 is a fine hobbyist/beginner camera and you'll pick up some good skills for when/if/need you move to a DSLR.

Make sure you keep an eye on the canberra section for any upcoming mini or micro meets. We should have something on soon. Come along, you're welcome to attend. Some of us are students as well.

A DSLR is definitely the next thing on the agenda - going to Europe in the middle of the year, so hopefully by then! In the meantime, though, I'm just going to stick it out and learn the tools and lingo a little better. Will definitely keep an eye / ear out for the Canberra meetings - I imagine that tips and pointers are most useful when face to face! That's not to say that the above feedback isn't helpful - it's exactly what I was after! Thanks folks!

Welcome cjs,

some beautiful photos there. I like the mountains and the NYC photos the best.

Just a pointer, you will find that you may get more comments if you put less photos per post, 4 or 5 being a good number, just have multiple posts, eg:

-USA part 1
-USA part 2
-Tapei part 1
......

Cheers and enjoy your time here in the forums, note, they can get addictive :? :?

Welcome CJS. Nice pictures here. numbers 3, 8 and 10 standout for me. BTW my first digital was the CP5700, nice camera. Some days I miss it. Especially trying to get those low to the ground pictures and being able to use the screen, much harder getting your head on the ground with the D70 :)
