took this arvo in the back yard, testing the ls2pj
was fairly dull light and thought the image could do with some saturation and popped it in photoshop.
I think I overdid it a tad.
does this look oversaturated??
edit: dropped sat down to as shot.
now all I gotta do is remove the red eye!

Steve, are you sure you didnt brush over its head feathers with a brush full of blue radium paint?

It is positivley glowing!
I wish there were some Rainbow Lorikeets around here, they are certainly very photogenic, and often quite tolerant of humans due to being fed by them. I know they build up to pest proportions in some urban areas, but they are definitely preferable to the masses of Noisy Miners I have here.

I don't think it's overdone Steve. I have a pair that regularly stay in the garden as I feed it. Plus we get the odd extra non regular visitors trying to feed. However the regular pair are very territorial and won't allow the others to feed on the food provided. Even if they're not feeding from it at the time! They'll swoop from the tree and scare off the others. I've been also listening to the number of calls that they make and it's amazing to see them communicating between themselves. There is one huge Aus Parrot book that I've seen at Dymocks that is $150 that tells you all things about the individual species from habitat, to food preferences, to their calls, to the subspecies etc. If you like Parrots it's probably worth the money.
They're also fairly easy to get to perch where you want aswell. I strapped together two garden stakes to make a big pole and put it in the ground. Strapped a branch to it with cable ties and put a nut/seed lolipop on it. After an hour or two they were on it. I have put on another branch with flowers but they haven't taken to it yet. They keep climbing down the lemon tree and flying across. I think they worried about the strength of the branch with the flowers on it. Might replace with Grevillia or something similar.

gordon,
all I did was boost the saturation +15 in photoshop.
dont think it was from the flash because the flash was @-1ev and the light was dim 1/60, f8 iso 200. hand held @ 400mm also
I originally adjusted the image on an uncalibrated monitor and thought it looked flat so boosted the sat.
after I posted it, I looked at a calibrated one and thought whoa, thats bright
but being lazy, I left it at that.

Now we're talking - wonderful shot
Very hard to get a shot of these that doesn't look over saturated - this one works nicely, and is sharp as

Beautiful bird shot. I love the way he's even posing and smiling for you
The colours of these fellas never ceases to amaze me and you've captured them very well indeed.

Great portrait! The blue is wild, maybe a smidge strong for me but still looks great... Be tempted to crop a little off the right hand side, maybe a square crop? The branch/leaves intruding on the RHS catch my eye...
Terrific portrait of a beautiful bird!

mudder: catches mine too. I considered a square crop or vertical but didnt feel right so left it full frame because it felt stronger.
I was going to blur or clone the RHS stuff out. Still might, cant rush these things

Steve,
Nice close-up of a Rainbow - I like it. I must admit that when I first saw pic (before I read your added comments) I thought, whoaa, too much saturation. Especially on the blue and red around the eye.
Rainbows are colourful birds and worked with them daily when I was a birdkeeper at Taronga Zoo for a few years, but these need to be desaturated a tad.
Still great pic, though.
Cheers

michael: the version you see now has been desat to as shot.
looks quite bright still, electronic flash reacts strongly with these guys, most shots I see are over flashed, this doesnt look overflashed to me but damned saturated though.
quite like it though
interested in your thoughts on the stick in RHS forground.
does it catch your eye??

Steve,
Normally sticks in the background or side would distract me from the photo but in this case they don't bother me, since your shot is so strong in composition, sharpness and colour.
Re. the sat being 'as shot', I agree it could be the flash overpowering the colour. I have had the same thing happen with Crimson Rosellas and Satin Bowerbird males when using fill flash.
Cheers
Michael
