The first one doesn't do much for me, but I like the second. I think the immenient bad weather really adds to the amosphere of the shot. You can tell there is bad weather brewing, yet he's still out nailing his moves.
The position of the arms is also interesting.

The second one captures the moment. It looks like you were using a remote strobe for the lighting and this has worked well..

The first image loses a little in its impact for me due to the colour and the fact that you are furher away from the jumper..

Me too. First one doesn't quite do it for me but love the second shot. The brewing storm behind and the fact that you have captured the skateboarder in action really work in this photo.

thanks for the comments guys. first pic was the first time using my surf housing was pretty much a learning experience. the lack of available light didn't help. didn't want to get too close because i wanted to get the whole rail in the photo and i didn't want to get landed on by any riders.

i'll try and explain the 2nd photo as much as i can. i used a canon 1d with a 15mm fish. i usually shoot with qtm t2's but i blew out a bulb and just used my friends flashes. lighting included 1 pocket wizard Tx and 3 Rx's, 2x metz cl2's and a vivitar 285hv.

one cl2 was used as fill to light up the stairs another cl2 was used as a key to light up the skater and the 285hv was a rim to make him pop out (but i didn't get to place the rim where i originally wanted it because the light stand kept falling over. had to move it to another spot where it isnt really as effective as i wanted it, oh well). ambient was metered and pulled down -1 stop to isolate and seperate the background. also adds to the effect of the clouds. all flashes metered seperately using a sekonic L-358 (the pw tx chip is very handy here). fill was metered and set appropriately, key and rim were metered and set to be +1 stop to make skater pop out. get in really close with the fisheye and shoot away.

i quickly drew up a diagram in paint to help explain.

Thanks for the diagram and indepth how-to on the lighting, great work! It has me keen for some creative lighting, I'm sure Wendell and his Dual SB-800's can draw something from this too.
