I've been meaning to post these for a while, finally got round to it

This is Ethan, my son Michael was flatting with Ethan's parents. Took these pics the day before Michael flew back to NZ for good.

Aren't a young child's eyes amazing?

I'm not much chop with people photography, never having taking a photo of a person before (I shoot mainly landscape and animal stuff) but I'll try anyway

Top Left, clipped the right eye RATS!
Top right Great expression but looking straight out of the frame, try having more space towards where the child's looking.
B-Left Nice, but like the TR one, wonder if they'd work more in landscape orientation to have more lateral space in the direction they're looking...?
B-Right, This is the pick of the bunch for me, just crop off the bottom part where the greenery (grass in background?) enters the frame, maybe just below the shoulders, above the armpits to avoid the fold in the skin...

Bugger the critique on the last one, that's a great memory there...

All these are great memories and that's the most important thing... They'll bring a smile to your dial for years

Thanks for the great critiques - very helpful.

I thought the post had died a death... people in general don't seem to like kid pics much.

I really like the first one - as you mentioned, shame about clipping his right eye. Don't know why I didn't fix up that silly bit of grass in the last one, takes another view to see the obvious sometimes

While I agree some people don't like kid photos, I think some of us find it harder to critique them. There is a level or emotion or engagement from them, that make it hard to stay subjective. (I hope that makes some sense).

The first one is the most engaging, but the cropped eye detracts from the shot.

The second is cute, but the pose is a little odd, looks like he it lost in thought, the shot seems a little soft.

This third shot is probably the best, or my favourite (1 would be if not for the eye). Shot seems sharp.

This one makes me almost think he;s a little angel the bright light, catchlit in the eyes, its just missing a cheeky smile.


As has been said the last shot is a great memory!

I agree that some people don't like kids photos....but many of us do. The way I see it, if you have a photo that you are proud of OR like...and you want to share it, then you should do so.....regardless of what the image is about !

You have taken some really nice photos here. I'm sure you're quite chuffed with them

My personal critique:
#1 - seems a bit too close to the RHS. With part of the eye being out of the frame, it seems to distract me a bit.

#2 - The white running down the LHS keeps taking my attention away from the subject. Not sure if you can darken that area or not ??

#3 - Really nice photo (my fave from the one's you've posted here). I wonder what a closer crop would look like...??

#4 - Again, the white is a bit distracting, but not as much as no. 2. Nice exposure though !

#5 - a very nice memory (no critique required)

Keep up the good work and please continue posting....

Many thanks for your great comments.

Unfortunately there is no data in the white bits - totally blown out trying to get the exposure on his face. It was a very bright day. I'll have a play with a subtle PS background when I get time, but not sure if I can make a decent enough job of it so it doesnt look fake

I agree with #3, probably the best shot (since I blew it on #1), I'll try some different crops there too.
