Firstly it might be nice to see whole thumb and secondly it might be interesting to PP the surface beyond the hand darker to increase contrast of the hand. These are of course just some suggestions rather than criticisms.

Mj, here is another version (actually a slightly different shot) which shows the thumb and has a much darker background. I don't know if it looks too much like it's hovering in the middle of nowhere now...?

Posted: Mon Apr 10, 2006 5:32 pmVery nice Macka - I like them both but much prefer the second one; entire hands are much nicer to look at. Regarding the 'floating' sensation, perhaps you could try to selectively target the shadow are in Camera Raw or Nikon Capture Editor and bring out any detail that may be there. Could be there's something hidden when you play with the exposure sliders. (I assume you shot in RAW.) Then you could overlay the images and get the best of both worlds. Just an idea suggested by your comments about the hand hovering in the middle of nowhere...

- the hard edge (timber?) behind the hand is too sharp and angular for the rest of the shot which is otherwise pleasingly soft and flowing.
- the thumb is now in view which I think I do prefer.
- the transition from light to shadow between the thumb and wrist has resulted in a lump which is less appealing than the first shot.
- the dof in the second has resulted in less finger in focus where I'd prefer the dof of the first shot.
- oh and finally on reflection you're probably right about the horizontal surface beyond... helps to stop the hand from just floating midair !!!

No, that's ok, comments are always appreciated. Neither image is perfect, but I think I prefer the first overall, fr the DOF and the context of the surface in front, even though it's maybe not such a natural pose and you can't see the thumb.
